Chapter 27- Plans on finding Anthony
The air was alive with the chatter of students as they sat with various friends on the bleachers, discussing the latest gossip, who was hot and who wasn't. Kara, Aria, Madi and me were nestled just where we had a good distance to see Leon playing football. He looked absolutely gorgeous with his dark mane of messy hair flying in the breeze, and the smile he flashed every time he caught my eye made me feel physically lighter.
"Can you peel your eyes off Leon for like a minute please Charlotte?" Madi asked, and I gave her a smile and looked down into the notebook Aria was hurriedly jotting notes down in.
"Ari, I can barely read that handwriting. That's just a chaotic whirlwind of ink. Translate, please?" Kara laughed as she passed me some of her chips. The day was a little more chilly today. In the painful cold I felt my heart warm even more, and Madi had brought a blanket for us to share. A crazy coloured quilt her grandmother had given as a birthday present and she had no reason to use until now. It was November 17th. The frigid air had a way of keeping us in the moment, and somehow made me appreciate the time.
"Kara Nilsson, don't you dare call my handwriting bad when you got an F in the 6th grade because Mrs Paracha couldn't read your handwriting in the English test at all!" Kara's face blossomed into a dark pink, and Aria gingerly rested her head on me and began to read her notes.
"Ways to help us find Charlie's dad, the mysterious and unknown Anthony Greene.
1) Look him up on social media. Does he have Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok? Any people who fit the description of your dad, Char, we should contact!
2) Ask around the older residents of Wellsbury. Like Edith Jones. Or maybe crazy Kai who lives down my street. My little brother thinks he's older than time itself!
3) Find any records he lived here. Maybe like dentist appointments, or if he worked in a shop. We can ask around too. Someone is bound to recognise him from the photo, right?
4) We find Jonathan Hills first. I bet he still lives here somewhere! Madi, we can ask your dad because he grew up here. Maybe the name rings a familiar bell.
5) If everything else fails, we ask Georgia. I know she won't tell you anything Charlie, but maybe with peer pressure on she'll open up. Adults eventually do.
I stared in newfound shock as Aria straightened up, her green eyes gaze fixed on me.
"Whatcha think? Pretty good, right?" No reply came from me.
"Charlie?" Madi asked, squeezing Aria's arm.
And I just started crying. Right there, in the school. I didn't think my friends had ever seen me cry, so they were pretty taken aback. A few popular girls like Indigo Simons and Naomi Duvall gave me bitchy side eyes and stared and whispered beneath cupped hands. But I didn't care.
"Are you ok?" Kara hissed.
"I...love...you...guys...so...much!" I sniffled and wiped my nose as my shoulder shook. But we all embraced in a hug I wouldn't. If all my other memories were erased I wouldn't mind because I had such a precious one to keep in my heart.
"It's just a list, Char. Why get so emotional? We love you so much, but it took five minutes to make!" Aria said as her hair danced in the breeze.
"But you don't need to care! I appreciate it so much. You guys give me the strength I need."
"Don't thank us, dummy! Just buy me a milkshake at Blue Moon next time," Madi yelled as she jumped down onto the next row. We all ran next to her, and even though all eyes were on us, I didn't mind. I felt a lot better than I had that morning. I still wasn't used to seeing my mom so...unarmed. So unprepared. Because it made me feel small as well. It was like a snowball effect. One thing toppled into the other.
"Hey, Mads, are we gonna wear those tank tops we agreed on for Ginny's-" Kara slapped her hand over her mouth and jumped in regret. It sooner dawned on me what she had meant to say.
"Ginny's surprise birthday? Don't worry, I don't mind." Kara gave a small smile as we all walked into chemistry. A party for Ginny? It would be interesting to see how things played out this time.
