Our last dance

"You were once my best friend and lover, what happened to us?"

Her head is on your chest, while you are slowly dancing to your song. She looks up to you with her bitter sweet puppy dog eyes. You put one wisp of her hair away from her beautiful face.

"What do you mean, my dear? Everything is fine with us, isn't it?"

You answer her with a charming smile, trying to look as innocent as possible. It is such a waste that this is your last time dancing with her before you have to finish your job. But you have delayed it already enough.

"Do you still remember the first time we danced to this song?"

She holds your hand tighter than before and starts to close her eyes, while pressing her body against yours.

"Of course, I remember our first time dancing to this song, after all that was the first time I have seen you. But don't change the topic, my dear."

"Well, every time we dance to this song I remember this day. You were shy, because you didn't know how to slow dance. You stepped on my foot three times in a row, because you were so clumsy. But we kept on dancing and dancing, until your moves were even better than mine, even if I taught you them. Haha"

She starts to giggle, but her eyes start to fill with tears, as she keeps on speaking.

"But this dance feels different. I doesn't feel your love or your commitment. I guess this is the end."

You start to panic, does she know your plan or your job? As you look her in the eyes, you start to doubt your plan. She is so beautiful and caring after all, but no snap out of it. You have to focus, the song is almost over. Soon it will be all over.

"What do you mean, my dear? I still love you, we are happy."

You lie, looking straight in her eyes. She gives you a light smile and one tear starts to roll down her check.

"I know your plan, my love. I have known it since the start. But I couldn't resist you, I couldn't fight against my heart. I love you more than anything on this world. I still adore you, my love. At least I spend my last minutes with the person I love the most, even if you have pretended to love me since the start."

With that the music stops, out of instinct you turn around and her a loud bang. Only now you realize that your love towards her has always been real.

"No, my dear."

You scream and start to cry, as you let her slowly fall down to the ground. Blood starts to flow out of your lovers fresh wounds. You both stare at each others eyes. She gives you a light smile, even if she is in so much pain from the shots.

"I- I am so sorry, my dear. I- I just should have stopped it as I had the chance. How could I be so blind? You were never the bad person, you were just a victim, while I am the bad person. How could I let that happen? Why didn't I stop it? I have loved you from the start and I will never stop loving you."

You put her close to your chest, now feeling her cold blood on your hands. With her last strength she wipes away your tears and gives you one last goodbye kiss.

"I forgive you, my love. I love you."

She whispers as she takes her last breath. You give her a last tight hug, you say your last goodbyes, before you stand up, putting your poker face on like you always do after another job is done.

Another perfectly done job, but was it really worth it to lose your soulmate?
