*Kenzie’s point of View*
Well, Draco really wasn’t kidding when he said he was going to get me. After managing to shake the disturbing but doubtful thought Fred and George gave me from my head, I headed back upstairs to Gryffindor Tower only to be tackled with strong arms trapping me.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he grinned mischievously.
“To bed,” I told him nonchalantly.
He grinned, taking a breath to say something, but I stopped him.
“Draco, I swear to God. If you make the house pun again, I’m going to hit you.”
He laughed, releasing his grip on me but holding one hand to twirl me around and face him, “Aw, but that’s no fun.”
“Precisely,” I smirked. “What are you doing here?”
He gave me a fake offended look, “You mean to tell me you don’t remember? I told you I was going to get you back for distracting me earlier.”
I laughed, “But it’s my job.”
He held me even tighter, “Part of it,” he grinned. “Come on, walk with me.”
Draco grabbed my hand and guided me away from the common room portrait.
I pretended to disapprove, “Aw, but Draco. I’m so tired.”
He pulled me around the corner and held me against a wall smirking, “Oh, I’ll make you tired.”
Draco held me closer to him, kissing me sweetly. I couldn’t help but kiss back; tousling his soft, flaxen hair. He began chuckling quietly under the kiss.
I broke the contact, eying him, “What’s so funny?”
He bit his lip, coercing another laugh. His eyes sparkling with mischief, “So... About that illegal act.”
I rolled my eyes, lightly prodding him away from me with a humored grin, “I don’t think so.”
“Worth a shot, right?” he winked.
Laughing, I gave him a squeezing hug. My head resting on his shoulder. I can’t believe how I can forget how much taller he is than me. Here I am, thinking I’m pretty tall (for a girl) and then here comes Draco. Standing at six foot two to my five foot eight.
We stood in silence, enveloped in each other’s arms with Draco brushing his smooth lips to my temple in tender kisses. The silence broken by laughter.
We faced towards the end of the hallway in time to see Neville and Krista coming towards us. Neville’s tie had been loosened and their hair was beyond untidy. Neville’s sticking up in a few places. Their laughter fading when they noticed me and Draco standing in front of them.
“Oh... Hey, guys...” Krista smiled, trying to smooth down her hair.
“Hey,” I greeted back in uncertainty.
Something isn’t right. The two of them seem different. Stranger than I’ve ever seen before. My eyes scanning over them, analyzing every small detail. Hearing their body language. Neville held his head back. His chin up and back arched to make his chest stick out. Keeping one hand held with Krista’s and the other on his hip, resting his thumb inside his slacks pocket. His face flushed like normal, but he still looked me in the eye. Neville never looks me in the eye. Krista’s posture was similar. Standing straight with a huge grin on her face as she held Neville’s hand and arm.
“Where have you guys been?” I asked, eying them suspiciously.
Neville lifted his hand from his pocket and combed through his hair, “Just around.”
Draco and I glanced at each other with looks of disbelief. He seemed a bit disturbed.
“Why is your hair so messy?”
Krista kept trying to level her hair down, “We just came from outside.”
I cocked an eyebrow, “You came from upstairs.”
“Well, it’s really windy,” Neville chimed up.
“But you’re sweaty.”
Krista pressed her lips together, “It’s warm tonight.”
“It’s snowing outside.”
“We... Ran?” Neville untruthfully claimed, glancing at Krista for approval.
Krista jumped at the idea, “Yes. We were running down here.”
Okay, I give up. There’s no use arguing with them, but they’re definitely up to something. I was about to say something when Krista stretched her arms.
“Hm, well this has been fun, but I’m tired. I guess we’ll see you two tomorrow,” she force yawned before leading Neville away.
I watched them go hurriedly. Leaving me and Draco alone once again.
“What the hell are they up to?” I questioned out loud.
I looked at Draco whose was cringing in disgust. Shaking his head as though it would remove the ideas flashing in his mind. I know what he’s thinking, but it really couldn’t be. Not Krista and especially not Neville. I understand how my sister thinks. Trust me, it can be pretty horrifying, but I can never see her actually going through with something like that.
I decided to change the subject, “Nevermind... Draco?”
He gave me a curious look, “Yeah?”
I sighed, “As we were saying. About the whole illegal acts, in another context. Do you think we should tell...?”
His eyes compressed shut, curling his fingers to his palm and pressing it to his forehead, “No, not yet. I don’t want to be torn away from you.”
I snuggled up to him, “But they’ll have to know eventually. Maybe we can be together this Christmas.”
He held me close, sighing into my hair, “Then we would have to be here. Anywhere else and it’d be ruined for us.”
As much as the truth stings, Draco’s right. It would be ruined for us.
“Don’t worry, love,” Draco whispered, “It will all work out.”
“I hope you’re right.”
We held each other tightly, wondering about our new situation. Well, not really new. Let’s just say that our love will be seen as an atrocity (Not that it isn’t already) to those we care about. It’s been a problem as far back as we can remember, yet it just worsens with time. It’s why Draco and I hid in the beginning. The fact that the news of us hasn’t travelled outside the castle walls is really a blessing.
Draco tried to calm me down, “There’s nothing they can do, Kenzie. Try as they might. Let their rivalry burn the way it has our whole lives. Let them believe the dumb things they believe. They don’t control us or what we do. Allow them to believe our passions are a sin. We are together and we love each other. And no argument of theirs can ever stop that.”
I don’t know what to say. Since the start, I’ve felt like the entire world was against us and in most cases, I was right. Draco guided me to the nearest windowsill to sit. Sitting beside me, he wrapped his arm around my shoulders and rested his head near mine.
“Kenzie?”
I wiped away a hidden tear, “Yes, Draco?”
“Do you remember when we first met?”
The sweet memory made me smile, “Like it was yesterday.”
The small, six year old me lied on the soft grass of our front yard. It was early summer in London. The weather was warm with the sun shining on my face. I giggled as a bunch of tomato red ladybugs scuttled on my arms, tickling me softly.
“Kenzie!”
I looked up to the front porch, “Yes, daddy?”
Dad looked so professional in his gray suit and royal blue tie. A briefcase sitting patiently at his feet.
“Are you still coming with me to the Ministry today, sweetheart?”
I jumped up in excitement causing all the ladybugs to fly off of me, “Of course!”
He smiled, “Then go get ready. We must leave soon.”
I ran inside and up the stairs to my bedroom. Mom had set out an outfit for me: A pair of black slacks and a long-sleeved, dressy indigo blouse. I slipped on the outfit with my black flats, brushed my teeth and strawberry blonde hair.
“Come on, Kenzie! It’s time to go!” Dad yelled from downstairs.
“I’m coming!” I yelled back, darting out of my bedroom. “I’m ready!”
Mom kissed my cheek, “Behave yourself and listen to daddy, okay?”
“Yes, mommy.”
I grabbed dad’s hand and we left the house and walked to town. I loved being here in the city. Seeing all these people enjoying their own lives. After walking for about fifteen minutes, dad and I approached an old, red telephone booth.
Dad slid the door open, “Ladies first.”
I skipped inside and dad followed along, shutting the door behind him. My heart was racing with eagerness to explore. I heard dad punch in a number and a woman’s voice coming through the receiver.
“Welcome to the Ministry of Magic. Press one if you are a guest and two if you are an employee.”
I watched as dad pressed both numbers. A light clanking sound filled my ears as a tiny, metal pin dropped from the coin return.
“Please enjoy your time here at the Ministry and please come back again.”
My excitement kept building as the booth started to sink down into the ground like an elevator. This was my first time here and I’m so ready for it.
Dad came up and stuck the pin on my shirt, “There. Now you have the privilege to be here. Everyone knows you’re my daughter, so you must be on your best behavior.”
“I will, daddy.”
He smiled at me as we reached the bottom and climbed out of the booth just to watch it go back up. My eyes widened at the scene. We were standing in a large, black marble hallway. Each side lined with fireplaces bursting green flames as hundreds of thousands of witches and wizards came streaming in. Letters folded into paper airplanes flew around the room, going in and out of shoots to get to their destinations. Two colossal posters of the Minister hung on each side of a stone sculpture that rested in the center of a fountain and reached to the ceiling. Dozens of elevators lined the wall behind it.
“Okay, Kenzie. I’m trusting you on this. Be careful where you wander. Some places you are not allowed to go to. I need to head up to the third floor, so just explore around. You know how to reach me if something happens.”
“Okay, dad.”
He kissed my forehead and headed over to the elevators. My dad knew I was safe here, even on my own at six years old. Many of his coworkers love me and Krista and they would always make sure we were safe.
I’m not sure how long I’ve been here. I’ve journeyed every floor and every corner I was allowed to go. Hunger and exhaustion began coming over me. I headed back to the main floor and sat on the edge of the water fountain, just taking a moment to breathe and rest.
“Excuse me, are you all right?”
I rubbed the tired from my eyes and looked up from the sloshing water. A young boy about the same age as me was wearing a simple black wizarding robe, watching me curiously. His white blonde hair brushing just above his mercury colored eyes.
“I’m fine, thank you. I’m just tired from wandering.”
He smiled and sat beside me, “Do you have family who works here?”
I nodded, “My dad.”
His smile broadened, “My dad works here, too!”
“That’s cool,” I giggled.
“It is. Hey, are you hungry?”
My stomach growled its response, making me blush in embarrassment. Before I could respond, he chuckled and pulled out a rich, green apple from his pocket, offering it to me.
“Oh, I couldn’t,” I started to say, but he tossed it to me.
I caught the cold piece of fruit in my hands just before it fell into the fountain. I examined the shining surface and looked back up to him. He just smiled, giving me a nod to go ahead before taking another one out of his other pocket and taking a bite. I bit into the fresh fruit hungrily. The perfectly tart juices trickling out of the apple and into my mouth.
I swallowed the first blissful bite, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” He smiled, “I’m Malfoy by the way. Draco Malfoy.”
“Nice to meet you, Draco. I’m Kenzie Lewis.”
He tilted his head to the side, “That’s an interesting name.”
I laughed, “So is Draco.”
He set his hand on the back of his head in humiliation, “Yeah, about that, I-”
“Draco!” Came a hissing voice.
We looked up to see a tall man marching towards us. He had white blonde hair as well, but much more long.
Draco looked up nervously, “Yes, dad?”
His dad was not happy, “What do you think you’re doing?”
Draco seemed frightened, “Just talking to Kenzie here.”
Fear ran like ice through my veins when the man glared at me, “Yes, one of the Lewis girls. Come on, Draco. We’re leaving. Now.”
Draco looked at me sadly, “I’m really sorry. Maybe talk again sometime?”
I smiled weakly, “I’d like that.”
I watched him run off after his father and I couldn’t help but sigh. What was that about?
“And from then on, I thought about the beautiful little girl my father was angry about me talking to,” Draco smiled, kissing me delicately on the lips. “Then we showed up at Hogwarts together leading to where we are now.”
I lightly bit my index finger as my face flushed pink, “Well, it took a while. After coming here, that’s when you got the ego. I was only able to see past it because I had met you before, even though it was five years prior.”
He laughed at the idea, “And I’m sorry for not speaking to you unless in a harsh way. After we met, my dad brainwashed me into thinking you weren’t what I believed you to be. My family has tried so hard to make me think muggle borns are filth. Even half-bloods for being tainted and blood traitors for giving up the line of purity. ”
“How’d that go?”
Draco seemed a bit ashamed, “Led me to that ego and ill-mannered behavior everyone knows me to have. I watched the other students every day to see what my parents had been teaching me. Especially you. The thing was, I never found anything. I wasn’t able to see what they saw.”
I pecked his cheek, “Is that why I caught you staring at me so many times?”
He pressed his lips into a thin line, “You noticed?”
I giggled, “Well, you weren’t exactly subtle half the time.”
He gave me a small grin, “Okay, well, yes. My father said to stay away from you at all times, but I couldn’t. I still saw the sweet, sleepy little girl sitting on the edge of the fountain of the Ministry of Magic.”
“And all I could see was the little, innocent boy going around and giving apples to strangers.”
He stood up, taking my hand and pulling me to my feet as well. My eyelids drooping for sleep, but I fought against it, not wanting to leave yet. Draco noticed and picked me up bridal style and carried me back to the Common room portrait.
He kissed me again, “You should get some rest, love.”
A tired smile curved my lips, “You should, too. I love you.”
He pecked my lips, “I love you, too.”
He gave me one last hug before turning around to go downstairs. I entered the common room and dragged myself upstairs to bed. A smile still tugging at my mouth as I went in and climbed into bed. I sighed contentedly, snuggling under the covers. You know something? I’m so lucky to have a guy like Draco.
