I didn't sleep much last night. I had terrible anxiety. I kept hearing noises. The swooshing of the trees outside, the sound of the air mattress when my father moved. Everything sounded like the volcano exploding because we were anticipating something. Also, the fact that building was soo hot.
We had breakfast and some tea. My mother had picked up the electric kettle last minute before leaving. Yay! Good thinking mommy! Our plans from there were to pack up our stuff and move to the technical institute at Diamonds. We should be more comfortable there. I was iffy about moving though because I was wondering how we would deal with our pets down there. We had already made plans to drop off our stuff and head back home to collect more things, but on our way down, we got word that the volcano exploded. I couldn't believe it! All this time, I didn't think it was going to happen. Therefore, in my mind, I was a little disappointed in myself for not packing many clothes, because now we couldn't go back.
We arrived at the Diamonds Technical Institute. It's a really nice facility. It has rooms like a hotel kitchenette and freezer we could use to store some food. We moved into our room. It's rather comfortable. We made up our rooms. We were blessed for my sister and me to be in a room and my parents in another. After we unpacked, we needed to get ready to prepare for the sabbath day. Our family decided to take a trip into town to get some supplies. We needed more foodstuff, bottled water, a three burner stove and a flask to hold hot water for the sabbath day. We did fairly well with packing but we still needed more stuff. My mother, sister and I, did the grocery shopping and my father did the shopping for the rest. On our way back, we stopped at the Calliaqua bakery to buy some bread.
OUR ROOM
When we got back, my mother decided to do a little cooking. She packed some frozen stuff, so she decided it would be a good idea to fry some fish and we would eat it with some stuff. Easy food nah.. cause who wants to make such a huge effort in cooking with all of this drama going on. While all this was happening, both of us parents were getting calls from relatives and friends all over the world, who saw the news and thought it was much worse than it sounded. The conditions where we were was still normal at the time. We were still figuring out how to deal with our pets, such as where to tie the dogs and how to keep our cat.
When I was on my way to give my dogs water, my father looked up in the sky to see a massive mushroom cloud. This was an explosion coming from La Soufriere. It was a beautiful, terrifying sight to behold. All of us were flustered and unsure how to really function at this point.... we were hearing all sorts of news from our family and neighbours. News from all over. We couldn't help but think about what it was like at home.
THE VIEW OF THE MUSHROOM CLOUD FROM THE DIAMONDS TECHNICAL INSTITUTE
Coming close to sunset, I made the decision to start filling containers with water. After that sight, we were sure water and electricity might go. We filled the flask. We're now getting ready to sleep. This was an awful day.
