"Name?" The woman across the counter from me asked. "James Campbell." I turned my head to see that the line at the DMV had gotten longer. It mostly consisted of people my age and above as it stretched through the door and outside. I turned back towards the woman that was helping me as I tried to ignore my building anxiety. She typed information into the computer, stopped, looked at me, then continued typing. "So, when will I get the new license?" I asked her as she handed my current one back to me along with some additional documents. "It could be as soon as a week or as late as six weeks." I looked down at my license to see what its expiration date was. April 14, 2032. My 22nd birthday. "Thanks." I put my license into my wallet then headed for the door. Once I was in the parking lot, I pulled out my phone to check what today's date was. March 28, 2032 10:43 am. It expired in 22 days. I knew I shouldn't have cut it close but things had gotten busy at work. The project that I had been working on for years was going to launch on April 11th. I remained lost in my thoughts as I opened the door of my car. When I got inside, I looked over at my amazing girlfriend, Sara Jordan. She was the most beautiful girl in the world. "So?" "Could be six weeks." "Doesn't your project launch soon? Three weeks, right?" "Two weeks but yeah." "Well, hopefully, it comes before then." "It better." I put the key into the ignition and turned it. I changed the setting from park into reverse. Then I backed out of the parking spot, trying not to hit anything. I put the car into drive and we started to head home.
