Jamie thought that his mind was playing tricks on him. He must not have heard that right. There's no way that Ash had said "dragon". Then again, he was chased by a creature made of magma and flew through a magical portal. So was it possible for dragons to be real?
"What?" Jamie around himself asking before he could stop.
"You know! You're dragon partner. Where is it?" Ash scoffed as she rolled her eyes. Jamie only stared at her dumbfounded. Ash looked at him for a few seconds before she caught on. "Wait! You don't have a dragon?!"
"We don't have dragons where I come from," Jamie hesitantly explained.
"What?! Where the frag are you from?!" Ash exclaimed, stumbling back in shock, her eyes wide open.
"England-Earth," Jamie stated, correcting himself quickly. Humans can't live in molten environments where magma creatures existed. But Jamie clearly wasn't on his world anymore. The portal was more than enough proof of that. Ash only looked more puzzled. She scratched her head as if she were searching deep into her brain for the information that she needed. She looked like she was trying her best to figure out what Jamie was talking about.
"Where?" Ash finally asked, as clueless as ever. Jamie didn't know how he could explain it fully. Maybe it would be best if he didn't say anymore, he'll only confuse Ash, and possibly himself even further.
Talking about his home suddenly made Jamie homesick. He felt his stomach churn at the thought of leaving Jasmine behind again. He felt guilt weigh down on him even more. He just wants to go home and make sure that Jasmine was okay.
"Hey, you good?" Ash suddenly asked, placing a hand on Jamie's shoulder.
"Sorry, just homesick," Jamie muttered, feeling ashamed. Ash sat down beside Jamie, her face sympathetic.
"I'm not the best at pep talks, so ignore me if I say something insulting," she said awkwardly. Jamie's head perked up, wondering what she wanted to say. "I don't know where you're from or how you got here without a dragon, but I'm sure Mum won't mind in you staying here a little longer."
The offer sounded good. Jamie had somewhere safe to sleep and he wouldn't have to worry about being beaten on a daily basis. The only thing was is that he wanted Jasmine to to be here too. He wanted her to be somewhere safe and show him her strength again. Strength that he wished that he had.
"Thank you, Ash. But-" he started, not wanting to seem to be a pain.
"No buts! On another plus, you get to see dragons. How much more awesome can this get for you?" Ash continued, offering a wide smile. Jamie had the urge to smile, but couldn't bring himself to do so. The thought of seeing real dragons was an exciting, thrilling even, thing to think about, but the homesickness overpowered that thought. Ash didn't seem to understand. She didn't understand that he looked and seemed to be more depressed. Ash looked like she was about to say something, but a sudden noise cut her off.
It was loud, almost like the engine of a motorcycle. Vibrations rattled the room. Jamie instinctively gripped the bedsheets, ignoring the pain in his hands as it surfaced again. Ash looked ecstatic as the sound faded. She suddenly got to her feet. She swiftly ran to the window. The curtains were flung open, emitting a blinding light into the room. Jamie squinted, his eyes stinging a little.
Ash suddenly dashed out of the room, abandoning Jamie in it. Jamie only watched the doorway as her feet faded away. There was a muffled speech from Ember before a door could be heard being flung open. What did Ash get so excited about so suddenly?
Jamie ignored the pain in his feet as he slowly got up. He hissed loudly and the pain almost made him sit back down. He bit his lip as he willed himself not to cry. This felt as worse as any beating that Carl had given him in the past. He briefly wondered if his feet were damaged permanently. He hoped not, he wouldn't be any good to anyone. Steeling himself as much as he could, he limped over to the window. He really shouldn't be doing this, but curiosity got the best of him. Jamie closed his eyes, once again trying his best not to cry. He heard an excited shout that was probably from Ash. He opened his eyes again, blinking furiously to get used to the light from the molten landscape again.
And what he saw next just blew him away.
