As soon as Jamie had lunch and felt more settled into the house, Nexus started his tutoring. He taught Jamie the alphabet first, making it easy for him to understand it. It took a while, but after an hour, Jamie had it all memorised. Nexus had brought over a few books for Jamie to start reading. It was thankfully simple stuff for him to start off with. The books mostly felt like textbooks given to students during their first year of secondary school, or for exams. All the books had information about different species of dragons and how to take care of each one. Most of the information there was repeated, but anything new that Jamie came across, he took note of it. Nexus had provided him with paper and a quill with ink at Jamie's request. It was so that he could go over anything, but not have to search the library or what he needed.
Since he wasn't used to using a quill, Jamie also practiced using it for a few minutes before he started taking notes. He felt like the entire time of learning how to read and write brought him back to when he first had to learn it back home.
Only something felt off.
He wasn't dyslexic, he was never diagnosed as being one. However, when Jamie started school, he struggled learning how to read and write. He even had to be given extra lessons to catch up with the other children. He was able to keep up after his first year of school, but it was still hard for him at the start.
However, here, the language he was reading suddenly felt easy. He was clueless at first, but now he was reading it like it was a second language to him.
It was very odd to him.
After reading and taking notes for a few hours, Jamie finally closed his book and put the quill in the inkwell. He rubbed his sore eyes and leaned back in his chair. He hadn't realised how long he had been reading for until he looked outside, seeing how the position of the sun had changed and how the sky was slowly changing colour. Maybe he should get some fresh air and something to drink. He happened to look at his egg, which was still in the middle of his table.
There was another thing that bothered him. He couldn't find much information about his egg, or the dragon that will hatch from it. Maybe there'll be more in the more advanced books. He'll just have to be patient and wait until wither he finds said book, or his egg hatches.
He felt optimistic or when that time came. He tried not to think about anything negative that might happen. He can't think like that for a while. He needs to be more positive about the situation.
As Jamie stroked the egg fondly, one of the doors to the library opened. Nexus sighed a little as he approached Jamie. He had been dealing with families that were coming to the house non stop. It seemed like he just found some time to get away for a while. No one else seemed to be in the house for now.
"How's the studying going?" Nexus asked, picking up one of papers that Jamie had written on.
"It's going along pretty well actually. I'm picking this up faster than I thought I would. It's kind of scary, to be honest," Jamie said, sitting up straight out of impulse. He looked down at the book that he had just closed. "Maybe I'm just that good of a reader." It was meant as a joke, but it was dry.
Nexus only hummed quietly, studying Jamie's notes. Jamie felt like, he was sweating. It again reminded him of a teacher looking over his work at school. It was kind of scary in a way. After a minute, he placed down the paper and looked at Jamie with a strange look.
"There's something that I need to show you," he finally said, giving Jamie an ominous vibe. He didn't wait for the boy to respond as he started to leave the library, going to the entrance that Jamie hadn't used yet. Jamie gently grabbed his egg, holding it close to him. One of the pieces of advice that he read was to keep the egg close to him at all times. It was to help strengthen the bond between him and his unborn dragon. Jamie wasn't quite sure how that worked, but he'll still try.
