Chapter Forty-Five: Never Giving Up

Ellie

At the end of the show, the entire band pours off stage and, instead of going to get water or something, they head straight towards us. Though they claim to be a fan of my videos, I still can’t grasp the fact that I’m standing in front of them. Like, if I reached out, I could touch them. I could touch their face - woah, okay, this is getting weird.

Panting, Austin stands across from me and runs a hand through his hair. “Man, I love performing so much,” He grins. “Is this what it’s like doing what you do? Y’know… uploading videos and just seeing the views explode?” He looks between me and Mark.

“Yeah, it’s crazy,” Mark answers. “Especially with all the comments, emails and letters you get from people telling you how much you’ve helped them. It’s bizarre.”

Austin catches a bottle that Alan threw to him, and instantly he unscrews the bottle. “Yeah, I bet,” He says, finally catching his breath. “I mean, I’ve been on a few videos on YouTube myself, you know, with interviews and everything, but I’ve never really.. made a personal video myself. Must be a thrill.”

“Oh, it is,” I say, tugging my lower lip between my teeth. “What’s it like performing on stage?” I ask.

“It’s fucking electric,” Alan tells me, running a hand through his hair. “There’s nothing like it, honestly. No drug could beat the feeling of being on stage.” He admits with a shrug.

“Yeah, because you know all about the drugs, don’t you, Alan?” Tino interrupts, a grin tweaking at the corners of his lips. I suddenly feel a tug on my hand, so I turn to see Bryony standing there.

“I’ll be right back, okay?” She tells me, and I nod my head and watch as she heads in the direction of the bathroom. I turn back, fumbling nervously with my hands. It’s so surreal, standing across from my favourite - okay, I think you get the point now.

“So..” Alan begins, pulling something out of his back pocket. He produces his white iPhone, in a cat case, of course. “Our band has to head out soon because we’re touring to another part of the city. You wanna exchange numbers or somethin’? It’d be awesome to talk to you.” He shrugs, offering his phone to me.

I look over to Mark for confirmation of some sort, to see if he’s jealous, even, but he doesn’t seem bothered about it at all. Why would he? It’s not like I’m going to date Alan or anything. I take Alan’s phone and then give him mine. I make a new contact on his phone, raising an eyebrow at the fact that he already has two Ellie’s there. To make myself known, I use my full name. Elliot.

When I give him his phone back and he mine, he texts me almost immediately with a cat emoji. I smile and tuck my phone in my pocket.

“Do you mind if I give your number to the others?” He asks, raising an eyebrow. I feel my stomach churn - though I am in love with this band, I can’t exactly just give my number out to them. I’ve barely known them for a few hours. Oh, well. When else am I going to get an opportunity like this?
