Following the rules is difficult for most people. When somebody tells you not to do something, you will probably do it out of curiosity. It is a dangerous instinct to break the rules because we are too curious not to. Things can end as badly as they can, although it is rarer for them to end well.

Atlas Hewitt wasn't a follower of the rules. He never cared for the consequences of his actions, only for the thrilling feeling breaking the rules gave him. It caused him a lot of trouble and dragged him into dangerous situations, but the boy refused to change his ways. This lifestyle made his heart beat for something. It gave him a reason to get up, to go through another day. As he liked to say, the rules would bend to his command before he even thought of obeying them.

But as a Shadowhunter, this thinking could result in him getting killed. Despite his dozens of missions done successfully without a plan, everyone kept telling Atlas he needed to listen to what he was told. His parents would say that a soldier with as much potential as him couldn't afford to lack discipline. The Clave would demand that you learn to respect people superior to you and follow our lead. No one understood that Atlas Hewitt was an uncontrollable tornado combusting with energy. He couldn't be a follower of anyone but his instincts.

His instincts, however, at that moment, sucked.

Atlas had been searching for a demon causing chaos in his old neighbourhood. The New York Insitute had sent him along his Parabatai, Evie Lightwood, due to his knowledge of these streets and her talents for tracking. The teenagers had looked all day, but it wasn't until the sun had settled that the demon finally manifested itself. While Evie told him they needed to go back and warn their superiors, Atlas insisted that they run after the creature. For some reason, Evie decided to listen to him. It didn't end the way they hoped it would have.

"I will kill you, Atlas Hewitt!" Evie shouted as she shot an arrow at the fifth demon of the clan they encountered. "You and your freaking instincts!"

"Oh, sorry I found the demon's lair!" Atlas retorted, empaling two demons with his spear. "No need to thank me."

Her stare could have buried him six feet under if a demon hadn't jumped on her shoulder. Evie quickly slapped it away and stabbed it with an arrow. The Parabatais retreated toward a wall, switching weapons for a moment. Atlas fired three arrows at once, pumping his fist in the air as he killed two demons. The one he missed rushed toward him, Evie blocking its way and cutting off its head.

"I will thank you with a slap behind your head and the beating of your life," Evie threatened as she flipped backwards to avoid getting bitten.
