❝ You're not weak for being in love. ❞

A sigh passed Luna's lips as she leaned in the chair beside Lukas' bed. She closed her eyes, trying to block out the screaming patients and the horrid smell of blood. Her headache hadn't dissipated, far from it. It remained there, banging against the walls of her head. Mixed with the guilt caused by Lukas' accident, she was feeling awful.
Her parents had left ten minutes ago, bringing home a tired Ruby and reluctant Arya. They tried to convince Luna to get some rest in her bed, but she wouldn't budge. Even if Hayley stayed with Lukas, Luna needed to be by his side and ensure he was fine. He was her responsibility, and she failed to keep him safe. Maybe if she had gone to the conference last night, he wouldn't be in a hospital bed.
Footsteps approached, making Luna open her eyes. She smiled faintly at Hayley, gladly accepting the offered cup of coffee. She had been desperate for something to keep her awake and agitated.
"How is he?" Hayley asked.
Luna sipped her coffee. "They say he might get a concussion, but that's about it." She paused before saying, "I should've attended that stupid conference."
Hayley shook her head. "You can't blame yourself for an accident. Just be grateful that Lukas isn't seriously injured." She rubbed the girl's back. "I know you think you need to protect him from everything, but some things can't be prevented. He's fine. Focus on that."
"I'm his big sister. It's my job," Luna retorted. "I'll always worry for him, Arya and Ruby."
They ended their short exchange there as someone knocked on the door. Luna's eyes widened slightly when she saw Erica standing in the doorway. The tension in her shoulders momentarily loosened, causing Hayley to lift a curious brow.
Erica stepped inside the room, fiddling with her hands. "Hi, sorry if I'm interrupting. I just wanted to see how you were doing."
Hayley smiled softly at the girl. "That's sweet of you." She glanced at Luna, giving her a discreet wink. "I'm going to go call Hope. I'll be back in a few."
She exited the room, leaving the girls alone. Luna motioned for Erica to come closer. They both moved to sit on the couch beside the door. Neither spoke for a minute, Erica's eyes fixed on Luna's side profile while Luna stared at her brother.
"How did you hear about it?" she asked, shifting her gaze toward Erica.
"I was there when it happened," the blonde girl answered. She offered a sympathetic grin. "I saw the car that hit Lukas. He and the Sheriff weren't the only ones. In all the panic, I think there were two other accidents. My mom and I were also almost hit."
