Pietro POV"Okay. Mr. Stark's taken care of everything, so you're good to go," Dr. Palmer says as she disconnects me from all the machines. "Your girlfriend's going to be happy to spend time with you outside the hospital."
"As am I. I've never met someone as amazing as she is," I answer, smiling as I think about my amazing girlfriend.
"Speaking of, she dropped this off for you. She couldn't come in since she had to get to school, but she did ask me to pass it off to you." Dr. Palmer hands me a paper bag. "Get changed and then I'll see you by the nurse's station."
I give her a small "thank you" as she leaves and I open the bag. Inside is a fresh set of clothes—jeans, a navy blue T-shirt, and a hoodie—and at the bottom is a shoe box with a note on top:
Wanda helped me pick it out, but the shoes are all me. There should be a car waiting for you to take you to the Avengers compound upstate. I'll see you there! —🐱
P.S. — NO RUNNING! I WILL FIND OUT!The shoes are the best pair I've ever owned—dark gray with neon blue laces and super comfortable. It's going to take all I have to not wear them out immediately.
I finish processing out and true to Kat's note, there's a car waiting for me. It's agonizing to sit and wait to arrive when I could run there in maybe two minutes, but I'd rather not face Kat's wrath. The drive to the Avengers compound is long—according to the driver, about an hour—but it feels much longer. Everything feels like it's moving in slow motion ever since I got my powers.
Tony Stark is waiting when the car pulls up. He gives me a handshake as I get out of t he car. "Pietro. Nice to see you up and at it," he says.
"It feels much better, too," I respond. "Why am I here?"
"Kat didn't tell you? You're an Avenger now. We need you here," Mr. Stark says.
"No, she told me. I just wasn't sure if she was serious," I say.
"She was. Your sister's inside about to destroy my multimillion-dollar facility with her nerves, so I'd go see her if I were you," he says. "And for what it's worth, I'm sorry about...your parents. I myself am not responsible for what happened, but it was my missiles, which makes me sort of responsible. I just...I don't want there to be any animosity between us."
"There isn't," I reassure him. "Kat has told me many things about you recently. You are not the kind of man who would murder innocent people on purpose."
"Thanks, kid. Anyway, let's head in, get you settled. Your room's between Kat's and your sister's, but any funny business and you're out," he says, clapping me on the shoulder.
We walk into the main room, where Wanda's got a variety of things suspended in the air before something smashes into the window. "What did the window do to you?" I joke.
"Pietro!" Wanda sprints over to me, wrapping me in a hug. "You got here earlier than I expected."
"I'm here. And alive," I say. "I think I'll start trusting Kat's visions much more from now on. Where is everybody else?"
"Training," Wanda says. "Nat gave me the day off partly since you were getting discharged today and partly because it was safer for everybody. I couldn't focus on anything else except my brother coming home."
Home. The last time Wanda and I had a place to call home was in Sokovia when we were kids, before our parents died. Now I realize that Wanda's right; this is home now. Kat's here with us, and we have a new family in the Avengers.
