I woke up with a smile on my face and rain pelting my window. Chipper, I ran downstairs to everyone already awake but not one person had a smile on their face, "What's going on?"
Kai bit his lip and walked over to me, "Follow me," I did what I was told and followed him into the study, "This morning, your great-grandpa passed away."
"Oh," I said quietly, "I-I'm sorry."
Kai let out a small chuckle, "It's okay but I didn't like the guy... none of us did really."
"Then why is everyone so gloomy?"
"Cause that's just death Z. But the funeral is Saturday."
"Where?"
"Boston."
"Boston?"
"We fly in Friday night and leave Sunday morning so not much of a vacation but it's gotta be done."
"Okay..."
"I know this a really bad time to ask but... What else are we doing today?"
"Um I don't know kid, what do you wanna do?"
"I...I don't know."
I retreated back to my room after breakfast. The death part felt odd to me and I wasn't quite sure how to help, or comfort or anything really.
I looked around my room and then made eye contact with the vans and pulled the number out of my drawer next to my bed dialing it but it went to voicemail and choked not know what to say, "Oh hey it's uh... God, I really wish you would have picked up, Um you gave me your number the other day while your working... at the van store course you know it was there I-" It cut me off and I dialed again to finish my voicemail, "Uh, Me again, it cut me off but Um, my names Aza, by the way, uh call me back when you get a chance."
I hung up facepalming my own stupid decision.
While I looked at my phone I dialed another number, "Trestle Creek Police department, how may I help you?"
"Uh I'd like to talk to Officer," I looked at the paper, "Myats."
"Alright, One second please."
I waited no longer than 30 seconds before someone picked up, "This is Officer Myats."
"Hey, it's uh Aza... you helped me when..."
"I remember you kid."
"How?"
"Small town, you okay? No one tried to kill you right?"
"No, no, I was just wondering if y'all made any progress on the case."
"Uh, I wouldn't know... About an hour after you left FBI came in and took over."
"FBI? Why?"
"I couldn't tell you kid... They gave no explanation and took over."
"Oh, okay well thanks anyway."
"No prob kid."
I hung up the phone and looked up hearing the floorboards creak, "What's going on?" Kai asked.
"Uh, FBI came in and took over the murder... I don't know if the killers still out there or not."
"Aza, You know I would never let anyone hurt you right?"
"I know."
"FBI though? Why?"
"I don't know."
