I locked my door and didn't answer it. I didn't go to school, and I did not come down to eat, "Aza, lunch is ready," I heard my grandma.

I didn't move. I heard the downstairs door close a couple of times and then a knock, "Kiddo..." I heard Kai's voice, "I'm sorry I hurt you," The door unlock and I shot up, "I'm not gonna yell at you Z," He walked over to me and I slowly started to move back, "Aza... please. Let me explain."

"Get out Kai... Just get out."

He shook his head, "No... cause I messed up and I need to talk to you kiddo."

Interested I finally looked him in the eyes, "Go on."

"I know you can protect yourself Z, I know you're a big girl, but you've gotta understand, Your the only thing I have left... And It's like every day your here you get a year older and I keep missing these big chunks of your life and I'm so sorry. I yelled at you last night cause I wasn't ready for you to grow up."

I finally nodded actually understanding, "Kai... What were you gonna tell me right before Sutton interrupted yesterday?"

He sighed, "Nothing muchkin... just that I love you."

I didn't believe him of course. He's been lying and will not stop lying. He's stalling on telling me what the big secret is. There was only one way to find it out... On my own.

"I have to go... I'll be back in time for dinner."

"Can I go?" I asked.

"Not this time."

"Please?"

"No, Aza."

"Kai, please."

"Aza, I said no."

Toying with Kai's emotions was really the only way I could get him to change his mind, "Please."

"No."

I wrapped my arms around him tucking my head under his shoulder, "Please, let me go with you. I want to spend time with you."

"Aza, in all fairness-"

"Please."

Kai sighed, "Alright fine."

I got up quickly getting dressed and waited in the car. When my dad finally came out he didn't wear a blazer anything really fancy. He wore a simple black button but rolled up to his elbows what caught me off guard was as he walked to the car he checked the clip in his gun before tucking it in his waistband and pulling his shirt over it.

"Why don't you just buy a holster?" I asked him when he got in the car.

"What?"

"Your gun. Why don't you just buy a holster?"

"Cause that's how I was taught, pulling it from my waistband."

I watched the road for about 30 minutes before we pulled up to a stand-alone restaurant with a closed sign out front. I unbuckled but Kai grabbed my arm, "Stay. In. the. Car," He said. I simply nodded.

Nervously watching as he walked in the unlocked door, "He'll be fine Aza," Jay reassured from the driver's seat.

"How long have you been driving my dad?" I asked leaning forward.

"21 years."

"21 years?!"

"I started driving him when he was 12."

Which meant he knew a lot, "Do you have a family?" I asked.

Jay looked at me confused, "I did..."
