We spent a few more weeks on the helicarrier. In that time I learned how to fight like Natasha and started learning archery from Clint. I had never learned archery before and it was all new and exciting to me but Clint said I caught on really fast. I was surprised when Fury came up on deck with my gun one day and began to teach me how to shoot and care for my gun. It made me feel like a mother caring for it. I was sure a child took just as much time as the gun did.
When we went back to Stark Tower, I was well learned in fighting, how to shoot a bow and a gun. When we got home Tony started teaching me how to drive.
He wouldn’t let me practice in my car. He said I had to wait till I had my license for that. It didn’t take me long to learn how to drive. I knew what I needed to know when I needed to know it and in a few short weeks Tony took me to get my license.
In the weeks after that I was everywhere. I went shopping with Pepper, sightseeing with Steve and Thor and attended party’s with Tony. I still hadn’t told Uncle Bruce about the secret cabinet behind the fridge, but every once in a while I would steal a candy bar or bag of chips out of it.
I was sitting in the living room curled up in my comforter watching a movie one night when I heard the door to the balcony open and close. I smiled, thinking it was Thor. When I turned, the smile dropped from my face. There was Danyella.
“What are you doing here?” I gasped, my voice was full of fear and she smiled at me.
“You didn’t think I would just forget about you?” she asked me in a sweet voice that sent chills down my spine. Tony was out with Pepper and Uncle Bruce was on the other side of the tower a couple flights up. There was no one to hear me scream. I was on my own, I had to save myself.
“You’re going to have a hard time killing me, even harder than last time.” I smirked at her, gaining my confidence. “And we both know how miserably you failed at that.” I taunted. She frowned that smiled, taking a step towards me. I backed away.
“What makes you so sure I’m here to kill you?” She asked innocently. Too late I realized there was someone behind me. A strong arm reached around and I took a deep breath because I knew enough to know what was next. I felt the cloth to my mouth and knew the fight would be over as soon as I had to take a breath.
I couldn’t let them get away with it that easily, so I struggled. I kicked off one slipper and it flew across the room and landed in the mini bar. It knocked over four bottles of booze. There was no way Tony would miss that. I kicked the other and it flew in the opposite direction, hitting the ceiling and taking out the big light. Glass scattered everywhere.
My lungs were desperate for fresh air and as I opened my mouth to take in the sweet fumes coming from the rag, I grabbed at the chain around my neck and yanked it off. I dropped it on the floor as everything began to get hazy. They would know something was wrong when they found that.
The last thought that entered my mind before everything went black was why hadn’t JARVIS alerted my Uncle that something was wrong?
When I woke up my head was pounding and my neck ached. I couldn’t feel anything under my feet and, even though I couldn’t feel them, my hands were tied up over my head. I must be hanging over something, but when I looked down the only thing that I saw was a stack of crates.
I was in a warehouse of some kind. I has hanging by my arms in the middle of the room. I could hear Danyella giggling somewhere.
“What is the point in this?” I asked loud enough for her to hear. “Tie me here and leave me? That’s the stupidest plan I have ever heard of.”
Danyella giggled some more. “And if I add fire to the mix?” she called out. “Is it still stupid?” My silence said it all and she started giggling again.
Soon I began to smell smoke in the air. It began to get thicker. I had to do something. The flames began to make their way towards me. I had to do something or I was going to die. It was then that through the roar of the fire that I heard Danyella yell out.
“I hope you survive! Then we can start making more because you will be immortal!”
What? That made no sense at all. Make more of what? How could I be immortal? She must have hit her head or something. That was the only thing I could think of at the moment.
The smoke got thicker and breathing became harder. I heard a siren over the roar of the fire. Soon there was shouting as well.
“The flame has spread to most of the merchandise Mr. Stark!” I heard someone yell. Wait. How on earth did I hear that? I shouldn’t have been able to hear that. Should I have?
“First my niece is kidnapped and now this. I’m sorry about this Tony.” UNCLE BRUCE WAS OUTSIDE!!!
I don’t know how I did it but I took a deep breath and let it out in a scream. I hoped they could hear that or I was toast. Literally.
I could feel the flames licking at my feet and legs. It hurt like nothing else. Not even Danyella’s bullet hurt this much. Suddenly there was a mighty roar. My uncle had heard me.
I sobbed with relief as the large door at the front of the room was torn away. I could barely see through all the smoke. There was a sonic clap and in one great whoosh, the fire was out. I was still dangling there but the rope that held my hands had been eaten away by the fire.
The silence before the rope snapped was deafening. As I fell towards the charred remains I heard another roar. My fall was stopped as I was caught by large hands and carried out of the warehouse in a pair of large green arms.
I coughed and blinked as I was carried out into the light. The Hulk growled at the paramedics that came forward to take me. I placed my still numb hand on his chest and he looked down at me.
“If you don’t let me go they cannot help me.” I said calmly. Why was I calm? I had almost been burned to death just a minute ago and I was sitting there comforting my outraged uncle.
The Hulk placed me into a smaller set of arms.
“That is one way to put out a fire.” Tony cracked as he placed me on a stretcher and they began to wheel me away. I heard the Hulk growl.
“Wait!” I yelled. The stretcher stopped and I looked at Tony. “Where is Thor?” I asked in a whisper. My brow furrowed in worry.
Tony was about to speak when there was a whoosh of air and there way Thor. Worry was etched across his face.
“Adalynn!” he yelled in worry. He rushed to me and took my hand in his. I could tell he was as upset as my uncle and needed to calm down.
“Tony. Will you ride with me to the hospital? Thor will you stay here and try to calm my uncle down. He can’t come to the hospital until he is normal size and has more clothes on his body.
Thor started to complain but I interrupted. “If Tony stays here Hulk is never going to calm down.” I hissed as they started taking me away. The last I saw of him out the ambulance window as they started towards the hospital.
