Chapter 21 - Second chance

Adelina's pov:

I woke up by a loud noise at my door. Someone kept banging on it calling my name from outside. I told him out loud to wait for me for a few seconds. I quickly got out of bed and got dressed. When I opened the door, a tall and masculine warrior was waiting for me. He told me to follow him, per Chris's orders. A black SUV was waiting for us at the front door. I got in and the car started immediately. The driver and the guard sitting next to him in the passenger seat were disturbingly quiet. I tried to start a conversation with them and find out what Chris wanted from me, but they didn't talk at all. I began to think that perhaps Maximus' health had deteriorated. I really hope not. Fifteen minutes later we arrived at the hospital. One of the guards came out first and opened the door for me. I got out and headed for the entrance. I quickly climbed the stairs and arrived outside Maximus' room. I was about to knock when Chris opened it telling me to come inside.

-"Has Maximus gotten worse?" I asked anxiously.

It was then that I heard a whisper, a whisper whose intensity gradually increased telling me to come closer. It was Maximus! "When did he wake up? I asked Chris surprised.

-"Adelina .....come ...closer" Maximus told me with great difficulty.

I approached his bed hesitantly. He gestured for me to sit next to him, which I did avoiding any eye contact with him. He grabbed my chin with his thumb and lifted my head up.

-"I want you to look at me. The things we are going to discuss are very important and I want all your attention on me" he said looking at me straight in the eyes.

-"Okay" I said timidly. I was absolutely sure he wanted to thank me for sitting with him last night and told me not to bother him again. If I've guessed right, I'll take the chance and ask his permission to turn back to my old pack.

- "Adelina, it's a little hard to tell you..." he said and ran his hands through his hair in frustration. Then he let out a sigh and continued, "Recent events have made me realize how wrong and unfair I have been to you. Chris informed me about the whole night you stayed with me. I know your stay yesterday helped improve my health and recovery from my coma and I can't thank you enough for that. I acknowledge the fact that you did all this despite the way I treated you. Considering all of the above, I have decided to give you a second chance."

-"A second chance? For what? What are you talking about?" I asked him puzzled.

-"I will accept you as my mate by introducing you to the pack as my future Luna as soon as possible. From now on you will always be by my side as you should have been from the beginning."

-"You what? This is the second chance you mentioned? What makes you think I'll comply with your wish? You didn't even ask my opinion! Who do you think you are?" I protested vigorously.

-"I don't understand your anger. Finally what you always wanted is happening. Instead of rejecting you I accept you and you react like this? What is wrong with you woman?" he asked angrily.

-"Don't you think you should have asked me first if I wanted to be your mate instead of telling me?" I asked him in frustration.

- "I am the Alpha of this pack. I don't need to consult anyone to make a decision for my life and the well-being of my pack. Besides, you are my mate. I do what every wolf does when he finds his mate that's what you wanted me to do all along, so what's all the fuss about?'

-"You really can't understand why?" I asked angrily.

- "No I can't" he replied coldly and continued "Anyway, I think I've made it clear. This is my decision and it's final. Tomorrow I'll gather the pack and announce to them that my mate has been found. Then I'll officially introduce you as my Luna. Some omegas will help you prepare for the ceremony while your bedroom will be ready as soon as you arrive to the pack house".

-"Huh? What are you saying? I'm not going to be your Luna just because you say so. I don't care if you changed your mind or if it suits you better. I refuse to participate in this travesty. You had the chance to be my mate and you've missed it. For so long you didn't want me.I still remember your words to me that I wasn't  fit to be your Luna. And now just because you saw that the bond obviously helped you recover from the coma, you decided to give us a second chance? And you have the audacity to inform me in this way about it without having discussed it with me first? No, I deny being your Luna. You hear? I DENY IT" I said stubbornly.

-"I'm not asking your permission for this. I'm just letting you know though I really don't need to. I'm your Alpha. Remember?" he said in an imposing manner. He then addressed Chris "Take her back to the pack house and then come back. Before you leave, have two warriors guard her in case she does something stupid." That's when he gave me a stern look. "I'll see you later love."

-"Go to hell" I answered back.

-"You know swearing women turn me off. You'll learn my tastes little by little. Chris take her. I want her relaxed for our night together" he said smugly.

I couldn't stand listening to him anymore. I was about to attack him when Chris grabbed me from behind and pulled me out of the room while I kicked and punched the air. Several minutes passed until I managed to calm down. I honestly didn't expect things to turn out like this.

-"What am I going to do? Instead of returning to my old pack I am going to be the Luna of this self centered Alpha" I told myself.

-"Unfortunately at the moment we have no alternative. You must follow his plan until we find the right opportunity to escape" my wolf advised.

Chris' pov:

I left Adelina at Maximus' house and arranged for two omegas to help her with everything. I tried to calm her down but it was clear she didn't trust me anymore. She probably thought I had some sort of involvement in Maximus' decision. It's sad because I really like her and definitely prefer her to be our Luna instead of that opportunist, Jina. I will do everything in my power to help her. This time I won't be idle if she needs me.

I returned to Maximus determined. He was waiting for me in his room already dressed and shaved.

-"You're finally back. What took you so long?" he asked irritably.

-"I tried to calm Adelina down before I left. What you did today was not what we agreed upon."

-"Relax everything is under control. Don't worry too much. Everything will go according to plan" he told me reassuringly.

I wouldn't count on that...
