Half an hour later, the three of them were on their way to Jess' and Barbara's house. Lindsey dropped the girls off to go and get some groceries for their dinner, promising Stevie with a tender kiss he'd be back as soon as possible, and heading out the driveway again.

Stevie and Sara made their way up to the front door. Barbara let them happily in and Sara ran up the stairs to pack the rest of her stuff. Stevie followed her mother into the kitchen, sitting down with her at the table and playing nervously with her cup of black tea.

“Mom, I have to tell you something..”, she finally said, lifted up her head and looked directly into Barbara's eyes who sat opposite of her.

“I know..”

“I guess Sara told you what was going on? Why she came here and didn't want to stay with Lindsey and I..?”

“Yeah, she did.”

“Well, okay.. That makes it a hell easier for me..”, she smiled shyly, “okay, Mom, I'm just gonna split it out”, she took a deep breath, “Lindsey is Sara's father! We did a paternity test and we got the results yesterday and they were positive!”

Stevie looked at Barbara, her heart pounding fast, nervously expecting her mother's reaction. Barbara looked back at her daughter and she knew the time had finally come. She took a deep breath herself and sighed heavily, her eyes leaving her daughter's that were filled with such an amount of love and excitement that it was killing her to only look at them.

“Mom?”, Stevie pleaded after a long pause of silence, “can you please say something?! Anything?!”

“Gosh, Stevie.. I don't even know where to begin..”

Stevie furrowed her brow, a look of concern and confusion appeared on her face as she heard her mother's response.

“What do you mean, Mom?”

Barbara finally lifted up her head, her eyes filled with tears, as she said: “Stevie, I knew.”

“You knew what?!”, Stevie asked quickly, her inside already turning into knots.

“I knew Lindsey was Sara's father..”

“Whaaat?!”, Stevie screamed and jumped off the chair.

“Stephanie, please, I'm so sorry.. Listen to me. I have to explain this to you..”, Barbara begged.

“You knew?! How long? Since when? Why didn't you tell me?!”, she yelled furiously.

“I've known for quite some time...”

“How long, mother?!”

“..16 years..”, it was barely a whisper.

“16 YEARS?!”

“Stephanie, please, you have to..”

“Wait! That means you knew even before Sara was born?!”, Stevie couldn't hold back her anger anymore. She simply couldn't believe this. Her mother had known that Lindsey was Sara's father and had never told her about it even though she, better than anyone else, had known how much Stevie had suffered from heartbreak the last 16 years of her life.

“It's true.. I wanna be honest with you.. After all these years you deserve some honesty.. I knew the day would come I would have to tell you that and you will probably hate me for what I did..”

“Stop talking around the subject!”, Stevie demanded harshly.

Barbara winced at the hard sound of Stevie's voice.

“I.. Well, I knew the very day you found out you were pregnant..”, she said quietly, still not meeting her daughter's eyes.

“Are you fucking kidding me?! You've known for 16 years that Lindsey, Sara and I were a family and you didn't have the delicacy to tell me about it once?! In 16 fucking years?!”, Stevie was screaming now.

“Stephanie, I'm so sorry.. But I had my reasons.. I just wanted to protect you”, Barbara cried.

“I was a grown-up woman! I didn't need you to protect me from the love of my life!”

“Oh, Stevie, yes you did!”

“This is unbelievable! You ruined everything! You're my mother, how could you do that?! We could have been a family, could have been happy! We could have had more children! And now it's all too late and it's all your fault!”

“Stevie, please, listen to me...”

“I have no intention whatsoever to listen to your lame explanations! There is no excuse for what you've done! You played God! You played God with all our lives!”

Barbara was crying desperately, now. She knew Stevie would react this way but experiencing it now, was a complete different thing.

“Just tell me one thing, did Dad know?”

“Wha-aat?”, Barbara stuttered.

“Did Dad know?!”

“No.. No, nobody knew. I didn't tell anybody..”

“I knew he would have never done that to me! He always wanted me to be happy!”

“Stephanie, don't say such things! I'm you mother, of course I always wanted you to be happy.”

“I will never forgive you what you've done! You ruined not only my life but Lindsey's, as well! You prevented Sara from having her father in her life, knowing far too well how much she had always wished to have one..”, Stevie went on and on, angry tears running down her cheeks, she was so disappointed, “..you watched me suffer for years, being a single mother, having people looking at me like I was some slut who got screwed by some fucking roadie..”

“Sara!”, Barbara suddenly said and looked stonily past Stevie to the kitchen door.

Stevie twirled around and saw her daughter standing in the door frame, shock written all over her young, innocent face when she turned and ran out of the house. The girl had heard every single word.

“Now, see what you've done!”, Stevie screamed at Barbara and followed Sara outside.

“Stevie, wait!”, Barbara yelled and ran after the two of them, as well.

As they raced out of the house, they noticed that Lindsey had returned and waited in the car for them. When he saw the three women approaching him furiously, he got confusedly out of the car.

“What's up?”, he asked, while Stevie and Barbara were yelling at each other and Sara jumped into the car with a tear-streaked face.

“Get the fuck away from me!”, Stevie screamed at Barbara who had tried to get a hold on Stevie's arm. Lindsey sensed immediately that something really terrible must have happened. He had never ever seen her talking like that to her mother.

Quickly, Stevie got next to Sara into the back of the car and wrapped her arms around her daughter who had started sobbing desperately. Lindsey looked shocked from the two of them back to Barbara who was crying, too.

“What the...”

“Take us home, Linds.”, Stevie pleaded, lovingly stroking Sara's hair.

“But what...?”

“Dad? Please take us home!”, Sara said suddenly and looked at her father with red, puffy eyes.

Dad... She had called him dad... He obeyed without any further questions, got into his seat and bent out of the driveway, leaving a completely messed up Barbara behind.
