I'm sorry

When Stevie woke up the next morning, she found his side of the bed still to be empty. He hadn't come back! She looked at the clock – it was 9 am. She sighed heavily. She had had a miserable night and she knew she wouldn't be able to fall asleep again, now that she was awake and hers and Lindsey's fight was back on her mind.

She got up and went for a shower, got dressed and put some light make-up on. She knew he was up already. She braced herself and walked downstairs into the kitchen. Just like she had imagined it, he was sitting at the table, already dressed, a cup of coffee in front of him, reading the newspapers.

She didn't look at him, went straight for some coffee, when she heard him saying: “Slept well?”

The teasing in his voice was unmistakeable – he knew exactly how badly she slept without him.

“Perfect!”, she snapped, “And you?”

“Fine!”

She sat down in front of him and watched him closely. Don't be weak, Steph, just don't be weak, she reminded herself, closed her eyes and breathed in and out.

“Why didn't you come back to bed last night?!”, she suddenly asked and would have loved to slap herself for saying it the very minute the words escaped her lips. So much about not being weak!

She saw his lips curling into a smile. He had won!

“Should I?!”, he asked, setting the newspapers aside and looking directly into her eyes.

Fuck! Those blue eyes were killing her!

“I thought you may come back to apologize!”, she said coldly and furrowed her brow.

“I think somebody missed me last night!”, he grinned.

“And I think somebody might think too highly of himself!”, she snapped in response.

“Oh, I don't think so!”, he winked at her with a knowing smile that annoyed the shit out of her..

She breathed heavily in and out again. She didn't want to freak out completely, so she tried to calm herself down.

“There was no need in shwoing up last night”, he said suddenly, “I told you there was no reason for yout to be worried but you didn't believe me. And since I've been having no intention to tell you yet what's going on and you said I won't be welcome back in our bed until I do...”

She snorted annoyed.

“...I didn't come along!”, he ended his explanation.

“Fine!”, she said, got up and went out of the kitchen outside into the garden.

“I think someone had a really bad night without me holding her tight!”, he yelled contentedly after her.

She clenched her teeth. Oh, how much she hated that he was right with this statement!

Lindsey let her simmer another full hour until he decided it was enough and sat down next to her in the garden. She ignored him.

“Stevie, please listen to me!”

She didn't react. He got up and kneeled down in front of her, so she had to look at him.

“I've never wanted to hurt or frighten you! There really is no reason for you to be so pissed about me. Please, tell me, in all this time since we're back together, have I ever given you any reason to not trust me? I love you, you hear me? I love you more than anything! I'm just begging you to trust me with this! I'm not going to hurt you, I promise. So please, let's get over it! I'm so tired of fighting with you! And honestly, I had a pretty bad night myself!”
