Kathryn had to contain a squeal when there was a clear fingerprint on the body! Instead of squealing, however, a wide grin spread across her face, making her look insane. Which, in all honesty, she probably could be considered insane half the time.
I guess that's just what happens when you're an immortal.
"You might want to send that in to the lab." she said, still trying to contain herself. Henry looked over at her, more curious about the immortal girl than ever.
Before anyone could reply, Jo walked in. "Have you guys made any progress on the body?" The detective asked.
"Good morning, Jo. As a matter of fact, we have. Thanks to Kathryn." Henry said, gesturing to the girl.
Only then did she realize that Kathryn was standing there, among the other two medical examiners. She looked over at Kathryn with a curious look in her eyes. "Is that so?"
"Yes. The killer used makeup to cover their fingerprint. A choice that was both odd and unwise. I managed to lift said print off the body." Kathryn launched into an explanation
"Yeah. Did you know that she constantly carries a fingerprinting kit with her?" Lucas added, making Kathryn laugh softly.
"Well, good work. But why would the killer cover a fingerprint? Why not wipe it off?" Jo asked.
"And here we are at the 'both odd and unwise' part." Henry agreed.
For a few moments, no one spoke. This, in turn, spiraled into an awkward silence. A silence that was eventually broken by Henry.
"So, erm... have you found any leads?" He asked.
"None. Not yet, anyway." Jo sighed.
"Well, speaking from a psychologist's point if view, who would have the need or want to put a body in a tree?" Kathryn asked after a brief silence.
Jo looked at her suspiciously, eyebrow raised.
"What?" Kathryn asked, confused.
"Since when can teenage girls be psychologists? You're supposed to be awkward, moody, self-centered, and boy crazy; not insightful and wise." Jo asked, the tiniest hint of a smile appearing on her face.
Kathryn's face paled. She screwed up. She screwed up bad. How could she have let herself slip like that!?
Henry stared at Kathryn, panic hidden behind his eyes. It was as if he was mentally telling her to come up with an answer fast or else Jo would know something was up.
Clearing her throat, Kathryn looked down at her feet. "My, uh, dad. He was an author. Always rambled on about what kind of character would have proper motive. Had a degree in criminal psychology. But, that was before he- he... Died..." she said quietly, trying to make it sound genuine. She even managed to muster a few tears.
Jo's face immediately softened. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know-" "No, no, it's fine. Don't apologize. You didn't kill him. None of it was your fault." Kathryn wiped her tears on the back of her hand.
"Uh, Henry, is it okay if I head back and hang out with Abe?" She asked a little less quietly. She didn't feel that there was much more she could do in the morgue.
"Of course." he said. He walked Kathryn outside, stopping once they were on the sidewalk. "Good cover-up story." he smiled. "Thank you. I'll go... relive my parents' deaths... Or something that a normal person would do..." Kathryn replied.
"Yes, go home and be depressed." Henry joked. "Maybe eat some cake..." she replied. "We don't have cake" Henry added. "This is New York City. I can find cake." Kathryn said.
When both immortals eventually parted ways, they did so with a laugh. It was good to have another immortal around.
For the first time in a long time, Kathryn could say without a doubt that life was good.
