The next day, I was awoken by my phone ringing. I groaned as I threw back my sheets, and grabbed it from my windowsill where I'd left it last night. It was my boss calling me.
"What?" I asked bluntly. I wasn't a morning person.
"We got you a placement at Modest. You better hurry, you start in an hour. I'm sending you the details now. Don't be late" he said, before hanging up.
"FUCK" I cursed, throwing my phone on my bed and hauling myself in the shower as quickly as I could. I'd asked the company to get me a placement at Modest, in order to get closer to Aston. Turns out they'd done so sooner than I'd expected.
After I'd finished in the shower, I started to make myself look respectable for my first day. Assuming it was an office job, I pulled out a high waisted black peplum skirt and a sheer cream blouse, matching my outfit with gold jewellery and glossy black heels. Maybe it was a little too sexy and intimidating for a simple office worker, but I didn't have anything more suitable; I'd have to go shopping tonight.
Running out of the house with my black handbag, I jumped in the car and sped off to the address Kingsley had given me. And as I'd guessed, a simple office worker, Mondays to Saturdays, 9am to 6pm, with quite a decent pay, which I wasn't receiving, of course. It'd go to the company.
Arriving at Modest! Management's building, I slipped out of the car and tottered inside. In the glamorous main reception, there were huge canvases hanging from the walls. They all appeared to be pictures of acts which Modest managed. On one of the larger ones were Aston and his band, JLS. I smiled at their grinning faces. I was so proud of how far they'd come.
I'd been told to head up to the seventh floor, so I got in the lift and pressed the button for the seventh floor. Just as the doors were about to shut, someone shouted
"Hold the lift!" it was a manly voice. I was shocked when one of Aston's bandmates got in the lift with me. Oritsé. "Thanks" he smiled.
"No problem"
"Are you new here? Only I haven't seen you around before" he asked
"Yeah, this is my first day" I smiled.
"Aw, well, welcome to Modest babe. I'm Oritsé" he smiled, sticking out his hand for me to shake.
"I know who you are" I chuckled as we shook hands.
"Well, that's a start I guess. What's gonna be your role here then?" he asked.
"Honestly.. I'm not too sure yet" I shrugged, just as the lift doors opened. We both stepped out, bumping right into the other members of JLS.
"Chloe? Again?" Aston questioned.
"I guess" I said, before rushing off into the office, trying to avoid a conversation with his bandmates asking how we knew each other.. He could explain that to them himself.
Soon enough, I was busy with my work, and I even had my own little office. I had a 45 minute lunch break around midday, and then I finished at six. I'd spent today just settling in, rather than spending time around Aston.
As I came out of my office that night, not looking where I was going, I bumped into someone, and fell to the ground. I looked up to see Aston stood over me.
"Oh, um, sorry.." he said, awkwardly helping me up, before turning to carry on down the corridor.
"Aston, wait" I yelled after him, stopping him. He turned back to face me. I jogged up towards him.
"What?"
"I don't want things to be like this between us. We're going to be working together now, and I don't want there to be any hard feelings. Can we put the past behind us and move on? Please?" I pleaded. He looked as if he'd been punched in the face.
"Move on? Are you fucking serious? Chloe, I'll NEVER be able to forget what you did, nor will I forgive you. Do you realise how much that destroyed me? I've never been through so much pain. I thought you loved me.. But clearly our feeling for each other weren't mutual" he spat, before heading off.
I stood still, a little taken aback by what had happened. I had tears in my eyes, shocked by what he'd said. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, his bandmate Marvin approached me.
"Listen, Chloe.. Don't be playing games with Aston, messing with his head. You're the last thing he needs right now" he said sternly.
"And what is that supposed to mean?"
"Doesn't matter" he mumbled.
I knew what I had to do.
I headed back to my office and scribbled down everything I had to say on a piece of paper and slipped it in an envelope. Making my way home, I pulled up on my driveway, before darting over the road to put my letter in Aston's mailbox. If he wouldn't listen to me in person, maybe he'd read my note and see I only had good intentions.
