Meredith's perspective
...
The new interns and residents started today. Meredith always loved and hated it at the same time. It was fun to watch them struggling while trying to figure out what to do. I probably shouldn't find joy in that... She was thinking back to her intern days, when she was wandering through the whole hospital not knowing where to go. Yes, I really shouldn't judge them, but it was still fun. She had walked through the hospital still with a smile on her lips from the memories; she walked towards the residents' lounge to see if the new resident had finally arrived. And this was the part she didn't like about new residents and interns. They were late, often unprofessional, didn't know what to do and the first few months you mostly spend in teaching the basics.
The new resident on her service had just arrived as she approached the resident's lounge.
"You're too late." She scolded him.
"I'm sorry. I-" Meredith didn't let him finish. She didn't need to hear explanations. She just needed him to be punctual from now on.
"Just make sure it won't happen again. I'll meet you in ten minutes to see our first patient. I want to see how much you already know. You are a fourth-year, right?"
"Yes, fourth-year resident."
"Okay."
...
A few hours later Meredith was in surgery with the new resident, DeLuca. She liked him, despite him being too late. He was great with patients, as far as she could tell that after one day, and he already knew more than most fourth-year residents. He seemed competent in what he was doing, and it was pleasant to work with him, because you didn't need to tell him every single step or try to stop him from killing the patient. It was refreshing, really, after working with all these other interns and residents over the past few weeks.
They finished the surgery in almost complete silence, except for some teaching questions and going through the procedure. And an hour later they were both scrubbing out after a successful surgery, and a long day.
"You did a good job in there." Meredith said looking up at him, stopping for a moment.
"I- Thank you, Dr. Grey." She saw him turning towards her. He seemed a little surprised at her compliment. Actually, it wasn't really a compliment, at least not in the way I say something nice because I want to say something nice. But he really did a great job in the OR.
She gave him a small smile, trying to tell him that she meant it before she went back to wash her hands.
"Where did you transfer from?" She asked after another moment, her curiosity taking over. It wasn't every year that you had residents transfer and especially not the competent ones.
"Seattle Press." He answered shortly.
"And they let you go?" She was surprised.
Meredith noticed that he was hesitating a little, as if he was going through some memories, before he answered slightly annoyed, looking down.
"Yes, they let me go."
"Okay." But something about his answer told her that there was a lot more to this story. But it wasn't really any of her business as long as he did his job. And he clearly didn't seem like he wanted to talk about it.
"I really need to go now. Thank you for letting me be in the OR today, Dr. Grey."
She gave him another smile, telling him that he was allowed to go – his shift already ended anyway – and then Meredith left the scrub room as well to change and then get home to her kids.
...
An hour later she finally arrived at home. Maggie had already put the kids to bed, so, she just went inside their rooms and gave them a good night kiss, while checking if everything was okay and then went downstairs again, joining Maggie with some reheated leftovers from their dinner on the sofa, while her sister ate some strawberries.
"How did it go with the new resident?" Maggie asked once she made herself comfortable on the sofa.
"Hello, Maggie. I'm feeling good. Thanks for asking. How are you?" Meredith answered laughing at her annoyed face. But after all she was her sister and Maggie knew how not amused she was when Bailey told her that the new transferring resident would be on her service for the first few weeks.
"Hello, Meredith. How was your day?" She answered ironically, pointing out every word as if to demonstrate how ridiculous this was "And how did it go with the new resident?" She asked quickly before Meredith even got a chance to say anything else, making her laugh again.
"You know your..." Maggie started again and made a weird gesture towards her "It is giving you away. If he had been annoying you would already complain. Thanks for your answer." Maggie concluded with a satisfied smile. And maybe she wasn't completely wrong.
"The surgery went well, and he surprised me a little with the things he already knew. And that actually made it a lot easier to work with him compared to the other residents, so, no, it wasn't annoying. Even though he was too late." Meredith finally answered her.
"He was too late?" Maggie also knew that she hated unreliable residents.
"Yeah, but maybe he had a reason. I don't know." Meredith drifted up to the short moment after their surgery, how surprised he looked when she told him that he did a good job. And then how he reacted once she asked why he transferred. "But I think he deserves a chance." She quickly ended, getting back to the present again.
"A chance? You do know that all interns and residents should get a chance, right?" Maggie laughed at her way of talking about the residents.
"Ah, you know what I mean." Meredith tried to get out of this conversation.
"Do I?" Maggie suddenly sounded a lot more interested in what she had said.
"Oh, shut up. I don't want to talk about work right now."
"Are we still talking about work?" She asked teasingly.
"No. Because I don't want to talk about it anymore." Meredith stood up, took one of Maggie's strawberries and walked away.
"Hey." She heard Maggie complaining behind her, before she went upstairs.
