Rory POV
"Well you know what they say... Maine awaits"
I can't believe it's her, she's here. I mean yes I came to Maine in the hope I would find her but in all honesty I didn't expect for her to still be here after all these years. I thought I would only come here to finish my degree and then I would skip town to the next place I pleased but now... well now that feels different.
I watch her face slowly fall and her hand slowly reaches out near my face but not yet making contact, almost as if she's scared that when she does I'll fade away into specks of dust. Internally I'm battling whether or not I want her to touch me or not. On one side she left me, she left me with the people she ran away from in the first place. I was 14, the exact age I needed a sister the most. The other half of me so badly wanted to give in and allow myself one act of comfort, I've yearned for comfort for so long and I didn't care where it came from - whether it was from friends I didn't truly bond with or boys who insisted they would make me feel good. Neither satisfied the feeling of being alone.
"Monica" I whispered realising she seemed frozen on the spot contemplating what to do. She only responded with more silent tears and almost on instinct I built a bridge between us by wiping the falling tears off her face with my thumb. She just smiled back with her brow still furrowed.
"We were going to come back I promise" she lets out making me halt
"You don't need to lie to me, I get it" do I though? Or was I just trying to comfort her? I couldn't tell.
"No. We were, but it wasn't safe. It's still... complicated" she looks behind me at the leaf entrance and pulls it back and glancing around in a slightly paranoid manor.
"Yeah I know it's not safe they're wolves in this forest so we need to get lily and get out" I say in a quiet voice only now coming back to my senses remembering where we are.
"Lily... you met lily" she gasps and turns to the young girl who has been watching us the entire time.
"Yeah I was trying to get her back to town but she bit me!" I hold my wrist back to my chest and it may seem childish but I pointed at her for dramatic effect.
"She bit you?" Monica asks a little confused
"No I didn't!" Lily said with a devilish laugh Making my mouth drop open
"Yes she did... look!" I show my wrist that still adorns small bite marks in the centre to Monica and she starts inspecting it.
"I hate to say it lil but you seem like the guilty party here" Monica chuckles making lily also break out into a laugh. I have to admit her laugh is infectious so I had to look down to hide my small smile.
"Okay so let's get going it's getting dark and it's quite the walk back to town" I say doing a 180 to start leaving. A hand wraps it's way around my arm and holds me in place.
"Wait" Monica says sharply "it's too dangerous to head back into town at this time" huh? I just stare at her in confusion.
"So you want us to wait here and just display ourselves as dogs dinner?" I quip folding my arms over my chest not understanding what she wants us to do here.
"No of course not... just..." she seemed really unsure of herself which didn't fill me with confidence "follow us" I was prepared to argue that heading in the opposite direction of town seemed like a downright stupid idea but Monica had already taken Lily's hand and started walking. In fact I stayed in my spot until lily looked back at me and held out her other free hand for me to take. Sighing I step forward and gently take hold of her little palm.
