more time

The planets they see in the sky spin along happily, twirling throughout the night sky. Stars and comets fall, leaving streaks of light behind they as they burn through the atmosphere.

If only the planet they lay on had continued to spin.

"How much longer?" Hawley asks, her doe-eyes turning to her partner-in-crime.

"Is this one of those times when you want me to lie to protect your delicate emotions?" Walter asks, his voice light but both of them know the truth.

She does want the lie.

And so does he.

"We've got all the time in the world," Walter strains a smile. Hawley nods, scooting closer to him. Beneath their backs is brown and barren, such a contrast to the color exploding from above. Walter sneaks a glance at his wrist, the rock in his stomach grows larger.

In reality, they only have a few minutes.

Another streak passes across the sky. Hawley squeezes her eyes closed and makes a wish. Walter watches her with tears gathering in his eyes, "What are you wishing for?"

"More time," she whispers. He pulls her hand to his mouth, planting a small kiss on her knuckles. She feels the wetness from his tears and chooses to keep her eyes closed.

She wants to remember him the way he's supposed to be.

Happy. Sarcastic. Loving. Goofy.

He can't take his eyes off of her, for fear he'll forget the spattering of freckles across her nose and the lopsided smile she always gave him. The way her eyes sparkled when she spoke of the animals she loved so dearly.

Kind. Stubborn. Beautiful. Passionate.

Minutes tick to seconds as Walter pulls her into his arms. She had always said his arms made her feel safe.

Protected.

Oh how he wished he could protect her from this fate.

Hawley reaches up to find his face, her eyes still closed. Finding his cheeks, she pulls his face down so their lips touch.

His eyes flutter closed as he savors the taste of her lips.

They hear the rumble in the distance. Salt mixes in with their kiss as the two lovers hold each other as the rumble descends upon them.

The planet that stopped spinning, is no more.
