"Wait till I serve lunch, Kaleb!" I shouted at my 4-year-old. He is so much like his father in his food habits that he's pissing me off.
It's Diwali today and we're celebrating at our house. I'm preparing sweets and this little boy is just pissing me off today. He's acting bratty today. It's all because of Daniel.
Daniel has spoilt him over the years so much that I'm afraid he'll grow up to be all bratty and manner-less. I am the meaner parent in the relationship since Daniel decided to be the softie. He often plays games with the kids and showers them with lots of gifts.
If that's not enough, Mom and Savannah spoil my kids too. A lot. They buy them chocolates and toys and candies and what not.
I'm not saying they don't love them or anything and I'm not stopping them from showing their love. I just want my kids to be grateful for whatever they have. I want them to know that just because they get things so easily doesn't mean everyone gets them. I want them to understand that people out there work twice as hard as them, maybe ten times and still don't get the privileges they do. I want them to recognise how incredibly lucky they are.
"Daniel!" I called for my husband and he walked into the kitchen, in a minute, with my 2-year-old daughter, Diara, in his arms.
Kaleb is Daniel's Dad's middle name and so we thought to name our son that. We combined Daniel and my name which made Diara. We google the name and Diara means Gift of God.
"What's the matter, coraźon?" He asked as he walked to me and placed a small kiss on my temple.
"Take your son out of my kitchen. If he stays her for another 20 minutes, he'll finish all the sweets before the dinner is even served." I said and Daniel threw back his head, laughing heartily at his sons habit, that his son gets from him. Diara, who didn't understand why her father laughed, innocently broke into a smile.
Our daughter loves to smile. Whenever someone around her smiles or laughs, she'll join them in a second. She has such a cute, toothless smile. It melts my heart.
"Take it easy, Kia." He says and I glare at him.
"Okay, fine." He said.
"Kaleb, buddy, wanna go play with Aiden? He just arrived." Kaleb is best friends with Aiden, Savannah's son.
Kaleb is a month younger to Aiden and Diara is 6 months older than Austin, Savannah's second son.
"Yeah!" Kaleb exclaimed happily just when Savannah and Mom entered the kitchen.
"Happy Diwali." We all wished each other and my kids received blessings from their grandmother and grandfather.
Savannah and Jack bought some new clothes for both Kaleb and Diara. Ma and Dad gave them both new video games and Xavier and Janet gave them a basket of muffins since this year I've banned them from receiving any kind of chocolates or candies.
Oh yeah, Xavier and Janet got married last year. They had a courthouse wedding but threw a big Reception party.
I and Daniel gifted Aiden and Austin with new colours and drawing books since both of them have keen interest in art.
"Mom and Dad, we all have a special gift for you." Savannah said.
"You didn't have to get us anything. You guys' happiness is worth much more to us than anything." Mom said but I shook my head.
"Ma, you might not want this but you both need this." I said and Daniel handed them the tickets.
"We're going to India?" Ma asked and we all nodded our heads.
"You know how, the other day you said that the NGO's work is stressing you out and you need a break? Well, I know you've always wanted to visit Rajasthan, so we thought you can have a 2 weeks long vacation and please take Dad with you too." Daniel said.
"Hey!" Dad said.
"What? At the office, you never let me work in peace." Daniel said and Dad rolled his eyes.
"You need to focus more on your family." Dad said and Daniel shook his head.
"I give them enough attention. I never give them a chance to complain." Daniel said and I nodded agreeing.
"It's true." I said and Xavier responded with a high-pitched, girl-like, "Awww..." I narrowed my eyes at him and he started laughing.
"Now, since we're all done with exchanging the gifts, can we please eat?" Janet asked and we all agreed.
I asked the house-help to lay out the cutlery and food on the dining table.
"Kiara, you made all these?" Savannah asked eyeing the table.
"Yup but I did have some help." I said and gave her a smile.
"Oh, by the way, before I forget, we're expecting." Janet said as Xavier kept a hand on his wife's still-flat belly.
"What? No way. So are we!" Savannah said and Daniel crossed his arms.
"Why didn't you guys tell us earlier?" He questioned.
"I forgot?" Janet said and Xavier nodded. Terrible excuse.
"We wanted to throw a party when we know the gender so we thought we wouldn't tell you guys now but Savannah announced it anyways." Jack said.
"Whatever. I want to thank my daughter and my son-in-law and my other son and daughter-in-law for the good news." Dad raised a toast as we took our seats on the table. We drank to them.
"I feel left out." Daniel pouted and we all chuckled.
"Thank you for inviting us, Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds." Janet raised a glass and we all repeated.
"Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds!"
