Kiara Malhotra
"Are we ready?" My father asked as soon as he stepped inside my hotel suite. Today's the day, my wedding day.
All of us are in the hotel I'm getting my married in. Since neither Savannah nor Daniel are church-going people, we decided there won't be a western-christian wedding ceremony. We'll get married the Hindu way only. I've already applied for the US citizenship and soon I'll get the approval too.
It took me over 3 hours to get ready but it's all worth it. I am wearing a lavender pink lehenga with heavy jewellery. I was wearing my bridal chuda and heavy neck piece. Traditionally, brides wear red on the wedding but I wanted to something different. Ever since I was small, I wanted to get married in a pink lehenga so that is exactly what I'm doing.
"Yes." I said, standing in front of him and my father kissed my forehead.
"You look beautiful, Kiara. I can't believe I'm going to marry you off today." His voice broke by the end and I hugged him quickly.
"Come on, now. Don't make her cry and ruin her makeup." My mom scolded my dad and he pulled away with a chuckle.
"Let's go." I nodded my head and we went to the big hall of the hotel where guest, my to-be in-laws and most importantly, Daniel is waiting.
As soon as I stepped in the hall, my eyes locked with Daniel who was looking sinfully handsome. He looks fabulous in the baby pink sherwani he was wearing. Even though his looks are American, he looked more fitting in the Indian clothes than most of the men present here. I noticed Savannah, her husband, Jack and Shiela Aunty were present there in traditional Indian dresses themselves. Some other close relatives of Daniel were present there too but they were wearing suits and posh dresses.
As I sat beside Daniel in front of the holy agni, a blush formed on my cheeks because Daniel hasn't even blinked yet. He's just starring at me. The priest a.k.a. Panditji cleared his throat and soon the ceremony began.
(Fire)Soon Panditji asked Daniel to make me wear the mangalsutra and he did as he was told. It had a simple design. The chain consisted of black beads and a small round diamond was in the centre.
Next, he pinched some vermillion between the tip of his thumb and index finger and applied it on my forehead. Some of it fell on my nose. Everyone clapped when that happened. It's a good omen when the vermillion spills on a bride's nose during the marriage ceremony. I smiled at Daniel and found him already smiling at me. His eyes shone bright and I found myself melting in them.
Then, we stood up and took our pheras around the holy fire.
(A/N: Mangalsutra is an auspicious thread of bead which married women wear as a token of good fortune. The bride and groom take 7 rounds or pheras around the holy fire. It's for them to stay together for the 7 lives that a person gets. In Hinduism, a person has 7 lives each and during marriage, the couple promises each other to stay together for all the seven lives.)
Next, we stood up and touched the feet of our elders, seeking their blessings. When I reached my dad, I couldn't help but break into tears. In my family, everyone knows, I am the most close to my dad and vice-versa.
"I'm going to miss you, papa." I said and hugged him, breaking into tears. "Me too, my princess, me too." He said and hugged me back. After a moment passed, I felt Daniel keep his hands on my shoulder. I broke the hug and dad looked at Daniel.
"Take good care of her. I'm giving you a piece of my heart." He said and Daniel sincerely nodded his head saying, "I promise."
I hugged Jai next. "I love you, Di." He said and I chuckled through the tears. "I love you too." I said and kissed the top of his head.
After I met everyone, my tears were still not stopping. This was way more difficult than I though it would be. I kept my hands on my face and kept crying. Daniel hugged me but I still kept weeping.
After a minute, he took my hand and made me sit on a chair nearby. He kneeled in front of me and took both my hands in his.
"I know we aren't doing vows but, Kia, my coraźon, I promise to always protect you, keep you warm, respect you and your family. I promise to give you your space and independence. I will never intrude or force you for anything. I'll keep your word above all. From today onwards, your wish is my command. I promise to treat you like a Queen that you are and keep you happy till my last day on this earth."
I smiled through my tears and hugged him tightly. He wrapped his one hand around me and with the other, he stroked my hair.
"Now, please stop crying, will you?" He said and I chuckled, nodding my head.
