Hearts pounding. Wind blowing. Leaves scraping the concrete ground. Cars horning. Streets busy. Clock ticking. Fingers tugging. Eyes downcast. Mind deep in thoughts. Atmosphere tense.
Those were all phrases to accurately describe the situation that the couple was in as they sat in the clinically white doctor's office, waiting the results. After not getting any better while on antitussives, Atsumu had finally been able to coax Kiyoomi into visiting a doctor to get a proper screening. A series of muffled hags could be heard from the raven as his lover worriedly squeezed his hand. Kiyoomi looked up to meet the anxious honey brown eyes staring back at him and offered a weak smile as he squeezed the smaller hand.
After a few anxious moments, the door clicked shut again and Atsumu jumped out of his seat. "How's it doc?" Atsumu's frantic tone scared the doctor as Kiyoomi stood up to coax his worried husband back into the chair, sending the doctor a quick apologetic nod. The doctor sat down behind his desk with a file and a few papers neatly placed in-front of him. "Mr Sakusa Kiyoomi and Mr Sakusa Atsumu correct?" The doctor, clarified before opening the files again when the couple nodded. "So how were the results?" Kiyoomi asked this time as he kept his hand on his husband's. The doctor sighed as he scanned the papers once more before looking up at them, an emotion akin to sadness reflected in his onyx eyes. "I'm sorry to say but there is a chance Mr Kiyoomi may have lung cancer. It's not confirmed yet as we need to run a few more test to determine if he has it or not and what stage he is at." The doctor informed them as tears started welling up in Atsumu's eyes, Kiyoomi just sitting beside him in disbelief. "B-bu-but, he-HES AS HEALTHY AS A HORSE! He exercises regularly, eats healthy, doesn't drink and his family doesn't have a history of cancer! There must be something wrong with the diagnosis!" Atsumu exclaimed as his dam of tears finally broke. "Does he smoke?" The doctor asked as he worriedly glanced at the two. Atsumu stayed silent as he looked down at his lap, Kiyoomi still not having recovered from the shock. The doctor sighed as he leaned back in his black roller chair. "I'm sorry Mr Atsumu. There is still hope though. It's still not confirmed yet, but there is a very high chance. Depending on the stage, he could have from 5 to 1 or even half years left to live. We will be running a few more test next week for Mr Kiyoomi but please refrain from overworking or doing any vigorous activity while he is coughing this bad. I'll see you back here in a week. For now, take care."
As they stepped out onto the buzzing streets, everything changed for them. This piece of knowledge had changed everything and all they could do was hope for the best. Kiyoomi and Atsumu squeezed each other's hands, eyes in a trance as they just stared, and stared, and... stared...
