Our Destiny Was An Accident

Chapter 3: Learning begins

After taking rounds to all his patients and taking care of some important works, Dr. Han visits Amy again. He asks about her activity to Nurse Seo.

Nurse Seo: Sir, she is mute since you've gone. Once she finished eating, I helped her to stand up and she walked a bit and then after looking at her image, she remain standing still right in front of the mirror. I tried to talk with her by asking if she needs anything, how is she feeling, etc, but she didn't respond at all.
Dr. Han: You should keep 24 hours eye on her and help her with whatever she needs. I trust you can help me on this.

( Nurse Seo is an expert in her profession, and is a good person by nature, so Han has faith that she is the only person whom he can rely on for this unexpected situation)
Dr. Han's statement {"I trust you can help me on this"} nonplussed Nurse Seo as he always used to be strictly in professional and bossy mode not letting anyone get into his business.

Nurse Seo ( in a baffled manner): Sure sir. I'll try my best.

After that, nurse enters Amy's room and asks her to bath. She did not reply. She takes her in the washroom, instructs her how to brush the teeth and provides basic detail about daily activities. She starts taking off her clothes to help her bath to which she pushes her out and knocks the door. Though she got startled by Amy's sudden action, she decided to stay calm and wait for her to come out. Inside washroom, Amy takes her clothes off and again start looking in the mirror, as if she is trying hard to know herself. She looks on the bruises that came from the accident, bandage around her head, her bare hand, her legs, her face and all, which she wants to remember, accept, acknowledge and memorise. She continued looking again and again, then.... she hears a voice.

Nurse Seo is calling from outside:  "Mam, it's already 15 minutes. What are you doing inside. Please let me in and help you. Are you okay? Atleast say something. I am worried. "

Amy then opens the shower and stands under it. Atleast this sound of shower helped relax nurse Seo since she didn't get any verbal response from her.
After 20 minutes, she finally opens the door. Nurse take a look on her. She looked fine. But something was odd. She tried smelling her hair just to find out that she even washed her hair with the shower gel instead of using shampoo. Nurse Seo again washes her hair after assuring Amy that she won't undress her, though the fun fact was that after bath Amy has put on her old clothes back. Seo kept smiling while washing her hair because Amy's appearance was too innocent and cute like a child. Meanwhile, she was even mesmerised by her thick and long black hair, and kept wondering about her true identity.
( Nurse Seo in her mind: "She is definitely not a Korean. Is she Arabic, Indian or Pakistani? What she was doing here? Was she a student or a worker or a tourist? Her family must be worried? Hope they find her very soon. Dr. Han has tried a lot to find her identity but no solid evidence was obtained out of the search.")

Once she is done, Seo gives her new hospital clothes to change in and closes the door. Amy comes out after changing dress.  Nurse Seo grabs her hand and makes her sit in front of the mirror. She dries her hair, put bandages on her wound and applies some light makeup on her and says- " Pretty!" Also, while turning her chair towards her face and getting on her knees to make an eye contact with her, she says- " Amy, you are beautiful. Just smile a little and you will become prettiest. "
( But she shows no change of expression)
Nurse Seo, while holding both her hands, tells her: " I know you are too frightened right now, isn't it. But don't worry. It happens. I am scared of many things too. But we don't stop. You don't speak at all. I know there are lots of things running in your mind, but it won't get solved unless you speak. I'll help you out, you just say it my dear. I am here to listen to you."

After saying this, nurse Seo really hoped that she'll speak out and looked eagerly for her response but in vain. Amy looked at her when she spoke but later she put her eyes down.
Nonetheless, Seo is determined not to lose hope. She has 26 years of working experience with 12 years been in neurosurgery department, so she has enough understanding on people's behaviour who undergoes brain surgery. Patient who throw tantrums due to anger issue, patient who are under anesthetics and hallucinating and others many who are scared, anxious, laughing incessantly, patients with tics, PTSD, alzheimer, and many more. Nurse Seo is 50 years old and the girl in front of her is pretty much like her own daughter who is just silent and in fear, so she doesn't find taking care of her as a tough job. She feels that taking fresh air might help her open up, so she brings Amy out in the hospital garden. As nurse Seo was taking Amy outside hospital on the wheelchair, she sensed that Amy is being too frightened but courageous at the same time. Too scared of unknown environment around her but courageous enough to face it. Finally, they arrived to their destination and Seo sits on the table in the garden. Amy started looking around curiously. She looked at flowers, trees and birds and smiled. Looked like the beauty of the nature took Amy's worry away.

Nurse Seo,  pointing at one flower, asked: "Do you know which flower is this?"
(This time, Amy looked at her with eyes full of curiosity.)
Nurse answered: " It's rose." And asked her to come and smell it.

Amy came closer to smell the flower and felt happy. She then started smelling every flower there and asked each flower's name. Seo felt so enthralled to see, that she is taking interest in knowing things, that she kept answering to all her questions very enthusiastically until her fuel exhausted. She had to even beg Amy to return to her room. Just like child's curiosity never stops once started, her zeal was unbeatable too. Though they came back, she continued to inquire about every object placed in her room. Totally worn out Seo begs for a break but she isn't listening to her plead. Thankfully, Seo' s plan worked of diverting Amy in watching primary teaching videos on the television that was placed in her room. This way she'll be able to learn many things without draining her out and finally she was able to take a long deep breath in  relief.
In afternoon, Dr. Han interrogates nurse Seo about Amy's condition. She reports that in one minute, Amy transformed from one silent person to an annoying 4 years child who can't stop questioning and further gives detail about what happened in the garden and afterwards. Dr. Han anticipatedly rushes to her room where she is watching learning videos. On his arrival, Amy stops watching video and gives him a glare that scares him a bit. He still grabs his courage to greet her and asks about her health. Amy stays silent and gives him a look that says "DO NOT DISTURB ". Dr. Han initially was hesitant but manages to please her using same method that helped nurse Seo. He started teaching her alphabets and she, just like before, started focusing on learning. From her behaviour, Han concluded one thing, and that is, that she enjoys learning. This was a good sign. It can open a gate for her interaction with the world and may be later this way she can find her memory back since doing things that we like and once did in the past but has forgotten, creates a deja vu. Thus, Dr. Han started working on it and Amy's learning process started right from the day one.
