"The original Team Radical for the win!" Yong exclaimed as him and Varian rummaged through a shelf, looking for the key, "We're gonna find the key way before Nuru and Hugo." Yong smiled widely. Varian smiled too, "I wouldn't be so sure. You saw how quickly Hugo found those tokens in Aardeterre. I wouldn't be surprised if he's already..." Varian trailed off when he placed his hand on a glass eye to move it. A vision flashed before his eyes. He saw a dark, dusty shelf next to a pendulum clock. Varian moved away and stared at the glass eye.
"What was that?" Yong asked.
"You saw that?" Varian looked to the boy.
"I saw a clock in my brain!" Yong yelled, gleefully.
"Interesting..." Varian took a closer look at the glass eye.
"Can I touch it?" Yong asked, excited.
"Uh...sure." Varian laughed and moved aside.Another vision of a shelf beside a pendulum clock flashed before their eyes.
"It must be something the others are doing..." Nuru guessed, "We were just by that shelf..."
"We'd better get back there, then." Hugo responded.
The vision flashed again, then again, leaving Nuru and Hugo slightly disorientated. They looked to each other, and spoke in unison,
"Yong.""I- I think that's enough, Yong." Varian laughed slightly, pulling the boy's hand away from the glass eye, "Let's find this shelf- it must be where the key is...It was somewhere dark." Varian looked around the room.
"There!" Yong pointed to one of the corners of the room, where there were no torches around.
"Lead the way." Varian smiled at the young boy."Hugo- put that down!" Nuru frowned, trying to take a small ornate box from his hand. The boy held it up out of her reach and grinned.
"Come on, all this stuff is lying around just waiting to be- Ow! Why did you kick me?" Hugo leaned down to rub his leg and Nuru snatched the box from his hand, replacing it on the shelf.
"To wipe that smirk off your face." The Princess responded.
"I don't think I deserved to be kicked."
"You should've listened when I told you to put it down."
"I don't take orders from you, Twinkle Toes." Hugo jeered. Nuru ignored him and continued walking.
The blonde looked to a shelf on his left and saw a golden skull with a glass eye in one of it's sockets. He glanced at Nuru, and she wasn't looking so he took the skull into his hands and lifted it. It was heavier than it looked. The boy was pulled down with the weight of it and stood there a moment, trying to judge whether his satchel would hold it. Nuru looked around and scoffed, "Are you serious?"
"Come on- its solid."
"I don't care- put it down!"
"No." Hugo smirked, opening his satchel and shoving the skull inside it. It barely fit, and in the struggle of getting it into his bag the glass eye fell out. He tried to stop it falling with his leg and it bounced and landed on the ground, chipping and rolling towards Nuru. The Princess leant down to pick it up and as soon as she touched it, there was another shared vision. They could see the shelf in the corner of the room from a different angle. Upon the shelf was a blue and gold masquerade mask and a silver goblet.
"Hugo- you're not going to get it in your bag!" Nuru's voice sounded in everyone's heads.Varian and Yong looked to one another.
"Magic!" Yong grinned.
"Magic." Varian repeated, "The eyes must be connected- like a system...each one we touch shows us what another is seeing...incredible." Varian smiled widely.
They scanned the shelves around them. They saw a familiar mask and ran over to the shelf. Varian moved the goblet and mask aside and took notice of a glass eye that sat on the shelf. There was a space on the shelf where there was no dust; where something had been sitting.
"What the...where is it?" Varian asked.
"I guess they already found it.." Yong sighed.
"We'd better ask." Varian looked up and scanned their surroundings. He cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted, "Hugo, Nuru!"
His voice didn't travel nearly as much as he'd expected, and there was no reply.
"Hey- why don't we use the eye?" Yong smiled.
"Good thinking!" Varian turned back to the shelf and touched the glass eye.
When Varian touched it, everyone shared a vision of Nuru and Hugo fighting over a golden skull. The surprise of seeing herself in the vision made Nuru let go, and Hugo dropped the skull to the floor, though he never let go, meaning it pulled him to the ground with it. The Princess sniggered.
"Uh, hey guys- did you find the key?"
Varian said, awkwardly.
"Varian?" Nuru asked, "We haven't found anything yet."
"Speak for yourself." Hugo grinned and Varian sighed.
"Hugo, what did you take?"
"Just some box and a statuette. Found this cool skull too-"
"Where did you find the statuette?" Varian asked, "There's something missing on this shelf where the key should be." He let go of the eye for a moment to examine the empty space on the shelf.
Nuru looked to Hugo and he rolled his eyes then rummaged for the statuette. The girl snatched it and looked at it closely. She saw the neck of the statue had an indent. She pulled the head and it popped off to reveal a strange-looking key. She looked up at Hugo.
"You're welcome." He smirked and she sighed, grabbing the glass eye.
"We can head to the next room." She told everyone.
