Growing up, Yoongi always assumed that he'd be an alpha or a beta. He'd never understood the hate for male omegas, they were just like the rest of the population, but he just assumed he'd be one of the other sub-genders.

So did everyone else in his life. He was a tough child, and growing up he'd never been the tallest or the strongest, but that didn't matter, seeing as he was only a child.

You get your mark when you turn 13, and Yoongi doubted he'd have anything to worry about the night before his 13th birthday.

All of his brothers were alpha's, and going back through his bloodline, the last time there had been a male omega was generations ago. He should've been fine.

It was tradition to tie up your wrist before you went to bed, and when you got up in the morning not check. You were supposed to have a surprise with your family and friends, after all it was considered similar to a coming of age ceremony.

Yoongi was having a party, and he'd invited the whole class. Obviously, the whole class wouldn't come, but they'd all been invited. Before thirteen the schools weren't segregated, so he had a full class and lots of friends.

He'd buzzed around excitedly the whole day. He didn't feel any different, his scent wouldn't become strong enough until at least a week later, and he had no idea what sub-gender he was.

He hoped to be a beta.

He was beyond shocked, when at the end of his party, his bind was untied and revealed a purple heart. Horrified could've been the only way to describe his emotion when everyone gasped and looked down at his wrist.

He didn't care that he was an omega specifically. He knew the societal ramifications of this. He had no issue with the heats, or the scents, he was horrified that he knew what he would be considered for the rest of his life.

He could hear the giggling and whispers, he could see the pointing.

He knew what this meant.

For the rest of his life, Yoongi was going to be considered inferior. Weak, submissive, disliked and the lowest of the low in societal terms.

His party ended abruptly, everyone rushing to leave. It had to have been the most un-ceremonious ending to a ceremony that he'd heard of.

For the rest of his time at home, he was considered the un-important brother. His parents never bragged about him, unlike his other brothers. It was always "Junghyun just did a phenomenal job on his finals", "Seungho just passed his physics class top of the class", "Channie won the school spelling bee".

There wasn't much to celebrate.

After his "ceremony", he finished the school year, and then went to the segregated secondary school.

Females of all  subgender were all on one wing of the school. Male alpha's and beta's were at another wing. The male omega's were put in their own section, thrown into an un-used classroom wherever it was most convenient. It really didn't matter. There were only two other male omega's in the school, and that was out of over a thousand kids.

It didn't help that one of those two omega's didn't like him, leaving him with basically one friend throughout all of school.

The curriculum he had wasn't rigorous at all. It wasn't hard to do, there wasn't a lot of actual schoolwork. Most of the day was spent learning how to be a good omega. Learning to do the cooking, laundry, housework, how to talk to alphas, how should you dress to remain suitable to the bachelors but not appear like a "nightwalker".
