The swing creaked. Logan swung on it, each arch sending him further skywards. The plain oak planks were brand new. It was 1998 and Logan was 10. Patton and Roman swung next to him, passing a ball. Logan smiled as he hung onto the ropes, listening to the laughter of the two of them. Patton wore brown suspenders and a skirt which fluttered in the wind. Logan reached out a hand and caught the ball. He passed it to Roman, giggling. The trio continued passing the handball as they rocked. Roman started humming. He wore a cardboard crown and a mock prince costume. Logan joined in the humming and soon all of them were making a sort of orchestra. It sounded surprisingly harmonious.
The swing creaked once more. The sky had turned dark and starlight shone on Logan's clothing which was a lilac hoodie and sweatpants. The planks making up the swing held Logan's weight surprisingly well. The autumn (Fall) leaves drifted down from the trees. The time had changed a bit as it was now the year 2000. Supposedly that is a good omen for new beginnings. Patton and Roman weren't allowed up this late. Air streamed across Logan face as he gazed at the sky. Stars twinkled back at him, a comforting presence. He closed his eyes feeling the autumn air on his face.
The swing swung backwards. Logan's sneakers drew patterns in the air. He lifted up his arm, looking at the watch. It was 2002 and 'Lord of the Rings: Two Towers' had just come out. The swing was chipped in one corner but in overall good shape. Logan closed his eyes, feeling the bright sunlight on his face. Laughter echoed beside him, three voices. He opened his eyes and looked at them. One person wore a dark black hoodie with hand sewn patches on it and they were laughing at a joke Patton said. Not much about the others outfits changed except Patton had a new skirt every day, today it was a navy one.
The swing flew forwards. Summer nights were his favourite time to sit on the swing. The swing creaked slightly louder but Logan paid it no attention as he glanced at his friend beside him. Virgil smiled at him although he clutched the ropes supporting the swing protectively. Logan rummaged through his pockets. He pulled out a bracelet saying 'BFF Forever!' Which Logan had made for Virgil and threw it to him. It raced through the air, landing safely on Virgil's lap. Virgil put it on and turned to Logan. If they weren't both on the swings Virgil would've hugged him for sure, but he could only mouth his appreciation.
The swing completed another arc. It was the year 2005 and petals had begun to fall down from trees. An equation was scrawled on Logan's seat. Logan was now 17. The five figures wore matching bracelets in their unique colours. The newest edition was a teen in a bowler hat. Half of their face was snake scales and their tongue was pointed like a snake as they laughed along with the others. They swung in sync, kicking their legs out in unison, and drawing backwards to complete the loop. There was a general aura of happiness floating throughout the group.
The swing rocked. Logan glanced at the new arrival. Another teenager with a moustache and a green dukes outfit stood on the edge of the swing, holding onto the rope as they leaned towards the grass. In their other hand they held a bottle of liquor, so Logan guessed they were the same age as him (18). Logan laughed at the expression on Remus' face, like he was steering a ship. Remus took a hefty swig and offered the bottle to Logan. After some thought he took it, enjoying the way the bitter beverage trickled down his throat. The other two figures on the swings stifled their laughter watching Logan belting out Disney music on a worn wooden swing with Remus by his side.
The swing slowed down. Logan rocked slowly, a bottle of wine in one hand and a picture of them all on a swing in the other. His face was wet with tears. They trickled slowly down his cheeks, unseen in the midnight starlight. Not even the moon could keep him company. The swing was old and worn down by now. Logan glanced down at the bottle on his friend. He could see his life played out in front of him with two options. Begin a life of drinking and drugs at the age of 21, or go back to the way it was before. The photograph was stained with tears. Logan made a decision.
The swing arced through the air. Logan smiled as he looked at the friends around him. Orange was pushing him, helping him reach new heights close to the treetops. Patton swung next to him, synchronised with him. Patton reached out a hand to Logan and Logan took it. The two flew through the sky. The sun rose behind them, illuminating their backs. Roman and Virgil were on the carousel, spinning to the sound of music. Remus was on top of the swing frames next to Janus. Logan knew that Remus and Janus would be blacked out on the floor soon with the amount of alcohol they were drinking. He turned back to Patton, his face lighting up. Logan knew that no matter what happens, he would stick by Patton's side.
A lifetime of happiness lied ahead.
