"She wasn't, if she was, why would she agree to break up? People in love don't do that Delilah! It doesn't work that way."
She stared at the phone, pressed against her palm before facing him again.
"Doe...
"Mr and mrs Gillespie! So nice to see you two!" Marianna Smith mocked as she walked into the bowling alley, holding her boyfriends hand.
The two brunettes turned around at the same time, Elena flipping Marianna the bird as she saw her brother and bestfriend coming towards them.
"Hey hey hey be nice." Charlie wrapped his arm around Elena's shoulder. The two started dating a little while after new years.
They were 'disgustingly cute', according to Owen.
"You're just scared cause the better team just arrived." Owen raised an eyebrow cockily.
"Pff puh-lease. I'll show you who the better Joyner is." The two siblings had mirrored expressions on their face, Elena looking as ready for a challenge as Owen was.
"Well," Marianna clapped her hands together "We can only find out who's 'the better one' if we start playing. We're wasting our time."
Charlie agreed as they walked up to the alleys, sitting on the first table they saw.
"Okay so Owen and Mar vs Elena and me?" The brown haired boy asked.
"Yeah."
"Sounds alright."
"Fine with me."
So, they typed in their names and the game started, the Joyner siblings trying to do anything and everything to distract eachother and Charlie and Marianna rolling their eyes and giving eachother looks while sighing to their childish behaviour.
They both knew where they signed up for though. Kinda their own fault don't you think?
"I'm never doing this double date thing again." Owen said irritated as he placed himself on the couch.
Marianna laughed and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"We'll get revenge on them alright? Bowling just .... isn't your thing." Owen didn't say anything in response, not liking how she was right. While Marianna had her fair share of strikes, Owen couldn't get past the spares. It wasn't fair, he had told her.
Elena and Charlie cheated, he had said. As his sister did her victory dance as if her life depended on it.
"See! I'm the better one!" Elena had called out, even though Owen 'knew by heart' that he was indeed the way more superior one.
Once again, his own words.
Marianna laughed at the fact that Owen didn't want to admit that she was correct, but left it for what it was.
She started the movie, cuddled into him and didn't bring up the double date again.
And the fact that Elena had asked her to do another one, was a secret she wanted to keep for a while as well.
All so she could protect the peace between her boy - and bestfriend.
"Oh hey Mar by the way, before i forget, i'm celebrating my birthday next week. You're coming right?" Owen said as he walked her back to her house.
"Ofcourse i will! But wait, what was the date again?"
"February 23rd."
"Oh shit ehm.... Isabella also celebrates her birthday that day."
"Didn't she turn 16 or 17 in like august?"
"16 and yeah she did but she didn't throw a party for it or anything yet. But i promise i'll be there alright? Maybe a little later though but i got it don't worry."
"Great! I'll keep you to that you know that right?"
"Yes i do." Marianna rolled her eyes while smiling.
It fell silent for a few seconds.
"Owen?"
"Hm?"
"Can i ask something from you though?"
"Ofcourse Smith, you know that."
"Well... okay then. I know it's your 19th birthday and all but please be careful with the alcohol? I know how .... good of a drinker you are and i don't want anything to happen to you.."
She looked down, ofcourse it was a shitty thing to ask him on his own birthday but the stories Elena, Alex and Luke always told her, weren't very reassuring so what else what she supposed to do?! He did love his alcohol though so she didn't know what he was going to say.
"Alright i will, i promise."
Marianna was in shock, even though she didn't really know why. Maybe because he had answered without thinking?
"Wait ... you you what?"
"Marianna, i promise."
