I picked the last firework out of the cart and tossed it onto the roof of the car on top of all the others.
"Careful!" Lucas exclaimed as he stared at the boxes of fireworks "There's enough gun powder in there to blow up a block."
"The fuck did I do?" I frowned.
"Uh, you weren't careful."
"Yes I was." I defended, crossing my arms over my chest.
"No, you weren't. You threw it."
"I'll throw you in a minute." I grumbled before gripping the handle of the cart and pushing it back towards the store, leaving Lucas staring after me, his mouth agape.
I shoved the cart through the broken door and made my way over to the others, before pushing it in line. Just as I was about to turn around and head back, my stomach cramped, again. I wrapped my arms around my waist and leant against a nearby shelf, groaning. After a moment the pain stopped and I ran my hands through my hair. I couldn't do this any longer. I had to know. I quickly jogged towards the door and waved at the others. "I'm going to the bathroom real quick."
"Okay, hurry." Nancy nodded before resuming her conversation with Jonathan.
"Yeah." I called over my shoulder as I turned and sprinted down the aisles towards the small bathroom at the back of the store.
Once I was inside, I slammed the door shut and pulled the test from my pocket. My hands were shaking as I unboxed it and I could feel a large wave of anxiety wash over me. I slowly sat on the toilet and closed my eyes. Pee goddammit. Why is it when I need to pee, I don't actually need to pee?
A few moment went by and I eventually relieved myself. My legs felt heavy as I stood up and fumbled on the sink for the instructions, reading them twice before setting the test face down.
I leant against the wall and anxiously bit my finger nails, and after staring at the small clock on the wall for what felt like the longest 3 minutes of my life, I slowly reached for the test.
"Evie?" A sudden knock on the door caused me to jump backwards as Will's voice filled my ears.
"What!" I shouted, without actually meaning to.
"We kind of need to go."
"Yeah, sorry... Coming now." I blabbed as I scrambled to pick up the packaging and shove it in the waste bin, before grabbing the test and opening the door.
"You okay?" Will frowned.
"Uh huh." I smiled as I walked out infront of him, turning to face him as I shoved the test in my back pocket. "Come on let's go then."
I jogged out of the store just as Mike opened the door to the car. "Finally."
"What took you so long?" Nancy laughed.
"Sorry, ran out of toilet paper." I said sheepishly.
"Okay, is everyone ready to- Will?" She cut herself off as her eyes drifted behind me. "What's wrong?"
I turned myself to look in the same direction and frowned. Will slowly stepped out of the store and was staring at something in his hand. He paused for a moment before looking straight at me, his eyes wide.
"Evie, you dropped this." He said quietly, causing the breath to catch in the back of my throat as I realised what he was holding. My hand went to my back pocket and I could feel the instant dread fill my body.
"Give me that." I whispered as I stepped towards Will and snatched the test out of his hands.
"What's that?" Nancy frowned as she stepped towards us. The others had now stopped talking and I could feel their eyes on me.
"Nothing- let's go." I quickly walked towards the car and opened the door.
"Evie - I... You-" Will stumbled over his words and I stopped in my tracks. I turned to look at him and my eyes suddenly filled with tears. I hadn't even looked at the test yet, but the look on Will's face said it all.
"What is that?" Max whispered as she walked over to stand next to me.
My breathing was ragged as I glanced at everyone. I could feel the panic setting in and my face going red as I slowly raised my hand from my side and turned the test over with my fingers, I heard Max gasp from beside me as she peered at it, but in that moment it was like everything else melted away, and it was just me. My eyes stared at the small screen and I felt a single tear roll down my cheek as I struggled to get the words out.
"I'm pregnant."
