Lying there in her bed asleep Alice held a faint smile. It had been the first time she had dreamt in almost a year let alone fallen asleep in a bed. Living in her perfect dream world her family would be functioning. Rather than separated and torn to shreds they were united under one roof in one room. All together laughing about the times they shared and at the jokes they had made. But nothing can stay perfect for too long in the Daisy household. Alice woke up to Emmit violently shaking her.She pushed her body up following behind him as they woke up the rest of their siblings. He had said something to them all though Alice was still half asleep and seemed not to be able to hear a word. Before she knew it she had found herself carrying a silver pale of water, the end of her tan nightdress stained with water. She tried keeping up with her siblings' pace checking behind her every few steps to make sure Eveline, who was carrying her bucket, was following behind them.
Alice watched Eveline's hands shake as she tried to steady the pale. Alice slowed down enough so that she could grab the pale from her younger sister's hand. Eveline sped up walking past Alice her tiny legs kicking up dirt as she shuffled. Alice looked up at the dark sky, this time of night was her favorite. When it was dark enough for there to be stars studded every inch of the dark void. Yet this night didn't seem like the others the thick scent of smoke filling the air.
As they approached the scene, Alice realized that the scent of smoke hadn't been from a chimney but a house. It had been completely engulfed in bright orange flames. Alice handed her pales over to Theo, she stayed behind with Eveline holding her small hand tightly. When she looked at the fire all she could see was her own home back in London. The flames engulfed the staircase before her mother could get down, and her father rushed back in for her mother. The smoke stains on her skin, and blood dripped from her hands where she had cut herself climbing out of a broken window.
Sweat poured from her forehead as it only got hotter. The tears streamed down her face as she realized her mother and father wouldn't be coming back. George's arms wrapped around her body as she tried to run back inside, her scream echoed for her parents to come back. Her voice went raspy as she tried to hold back any more tears.
And so now standing in front of the burning house all Alice could do was stare at the fire. Her eyes were glassy holding back memories and tears alike. She held Eveline's hand tighter as she wrapped her small arms around Alice's leg. Alice released her hand as Eveline's grip tightened on Alice's leg.
Alice's gaze was diverted to Anne who had begun running into the flaming house. Alice's heart skipped a beat she couldn't lose anyone else to the flame. Her body would not move, it held her in place begging her not to go running into the house after Anne. Her hand traveled to the back of Eveline's head pressing it into her leg gently. She could hear Eveline's faint tears a noise she had never heard before. Even at such a younger age Eveline associated fire with death, a small part of Alice wanted to tell her everything would be okay. Yet she knew there was always the chance Anne could be lost to the flames.
Her gaze couldn't leave the door, she found herself counting the seconds until Anne came running out. She counted staring at the door, no one leaving. Out of the corner of her glassy eyes, she saw George sprint toward the door. He shoved his way into the house past falling wood. Sweat dripped down his forehead as the heat swelled. Eveline ran from Alice over to Emma who was standing with the Cuthberts. Alice tried and run after him not until Theo had already wrapped his arms around her, "Alice It won't help anyone if you get yourself killed."
"How can you just let him go in there!" She screamed at the top of her lungs. Theo held her tightly against him so she couldn't start running. Choking back tears, Alice wanted to be able to save someone to not let down her family all over again.
Theos grip loosened as George came out of the building coughing carrying a passed-out, Anne. Escaping Theo's grasp Alice made a dead run to George. Tears fell on her face at the sight of his charcoal face. He handed Anne over to an older man who came running over to them. He walked back over to an older woman lightly stroking Anne's head. Alice wanted to hug George and at the same, she wanted to punch his stupid face. She was tired of people leaving her behind, she was tired of crying over memories.
She could only stand there in front of him, tears streaming down her face and an angered expression on her face. He reached out leaning his body on her shoulder a slight whimper in his voice, "I couldn't let anyone else die. I couldn't lose anyone else." Alice had been selfish only thinking of her pain and not noticing how much it hurt her brothers and sisters. The pain in their eyes was masked by their lively voices and bright behavior. Swinging her arms around his neck she buried her face in his smoky shoulder not saying a word.
Her siblings came running over to them Theo patted George's back, "You're just about the dumbest person I've seen yet, and hell have you met Emmit." Even when they were all filled with worry they couldn't help but laugh. Emma cried through her laughter Lilian held her pinky trying to contain her tears. Emmit scoffed at first before giving in to his laughter. They may be unconventional and quite frankly broken but they are a family. What can I say there Daisy's no one can hurt them as badly as their own family can.
