Socks spotted Laff and strutted towards him. They were so close to each other, close enough that Laff could close the gap. Socks leaned in, and they were about to kiss. BEEP BEEP BEEP, BEEP BEEP BEEP! Laff bolted out of bed and realized that it was just a dream. He sighed, of course, it was. Why would Socks, the ultra-popular kid, even know his name? They were probably the least similar in the whole school. Laff was a nerd who always had his nose in his book when people weren't teasing him. Socks was the kid who knew every trend and everyone liked him. Laff thought about Socks while he got ready, and until he got on the bus and began to listen to the radio. Love songs. Of course. The universe was against him today. He trudged into school with his earbuds in and went to his locker. Great. The popular gang was there, and guess who was in the middle. Socks. Laff tried to avoid staring at his perfect face and quietly got his stuff. He walked to his first-period class and saw that their teacher was preparing a presentation. Amazing, the most boring topic of the year. Physics. He walked to the back of the classroom and sat down. Before he knew it, the class was starting. He half-listened to the teacher, knowing that he could get the notes from Joocie later. He stared at Socks the whole class, who was quiet for once. He went to the rest of his classes but didn't pay attention. His mind wandered and he thought about his dream. He wished he'd stayed home. Or, even better, stayed asleep. His day dragged along until lunch when he got to see his friends. He slid into a seat at a table with Joocie, Tbvg, Oof, and Nadwe. They were the only ones who knew about his crush on Socks. After they ate, they went outside. Laff was trying to read but he kept on getting distracted by Socks' loud friends. Even if he had a crush on him, nobody interrupted his reading. He sent a glare toward him, who for some reason was already staring at him. When they made eye contact, they both blushed. Laff tried to go back to reading but was distracted yet again by thoughts of Socks. After a few more classes, it was the last period of the day. Ela. At least the teacher was nice. Or, that's what Laff thought until he randomly gave out assigned seats and put him next to Socks. Then he said that they had to do a weeklong project all about the person they were sitting with. The universe was against him. He glanced up and glared at Socks, then went back to thinking about him. He was shaken out of his thoughts when Socks talked to him."So...um...could I get your number? For the project of course," Laff nodded and handed him his phone. Socksster typed in his number and texted Laff quickly. Laff saved the contact as Socks. He glanced at Socks's phone and saw that he was Laff. Later, as Laff was getting ready to leave the wretched place, he got a message.Socks: Hey, who's place r we going to for the project?Laff: Mine ig :)Laff was panicking. Should he have sent the smiley face? Wait, that wasn't important, Socks was coming to his house! Laff texted him his address, then went to get ready. He decided to wear his favorite dinosaur hoodie and sweatpants. Socks probably didn't like him anyway, so why should he even try? He threw the little mess that was in his room into the closet, warned his mom and sister that he was having a friend over, and pulled out some cookies that his mom had made. He had just finished all of that and was scrolling through his favorite fanfic when the doorbell rang. He hopped up and opened the door to find Socks dressed in an orange hoodie and grey jeans. He stepped aside and let him in."Let's go to my room," said Laff, a bit flustered. I mean, his crush was at his house! They got up and began the project."So, Socks, how many...family members do you have?" asked Laff, still a little flustered."First, call me Socks. Second, three. Just me, my mom, and my dad.""...Ok." Laff was floating. He could call him Socks! They finished that day's work, then hung out a little. They continued like that until the project was done, and by then, they were pretty good friends. They didn't talk at school but hung out every night at each other's houses. They became such good friends that Socks admitted that he hated the popular kids and only hung out with them so he wouldn't be bullied. Laff sympathized but knew he would be too much of an introvert to hang out with them. He would have to ask if Joocie could though, he was an extreme extrovert. Later in the year, he somehow found himself hanging out with the popular kids, including Socks, Meme, Blaza, Tbh, Laff, and now Joocie, Tbvg, and Oof. One night, Socks called and asked if he could sleep over at Laff's house, he'd just fought with his mom and needed a place to cool off. Laff agreed, it was another chance to hang out. The more he found out about Socks, the more he liked him. In about 10 minutes, Socks was over at his house with nothing but his phone."I'm sorry, I just really needed a place to stay, you were the first one I thought of, and I had to get out of there as quickly as possible, so I don't have clothes and-" He was cut off by Laff telling him that it's fine, he was always welcome, and he could borrow clothes. Laff gave him a hesitant hug, and Socks leaned into him. They went inside and Laff gave him a change of clothes and left the room so he could change. They stayed up late, late enough that Laff forgot why they always had sleepovers at Socks's. His father was an alcoholic, and late every night, if Laff wasn't sleeping, he would beat him up and go out to drink more. His mom had divorced him, but he was salty about having to pay child support. It was around 1 am, and Laff heard a door slam. He turned to Socks and told him to go and hide in the closet."Why?" Socks asked, looking nervous."J-just go, please, don't come out, no matter what you hear," Socks looked scared now but he did as Laff asked. Laff hid the Ouija board they'd been playing with and pretended to be asleep. The door slammed open and a dark figure stumbled into the room. In its drunken state, it noticed the Ouija board and Laff's scared breathing. Laff was dragged out of bed, not even trying to escape it. He locked eyes with Socks and mouthed stay there at him. He got dragged into the living room and his dad started hitting him. Laff normally didn't fight it, but he didn't want to pass out in front of Socks. Eventually, it was too much, and as he was about to pass out it all stopped. He heard a door open and then slam closed, and he fought to stay awake. Socks is right upstairs, he reminded himself. After about 30 seconds, a terrified Socks came down the stairs. He stopped when he saw Laff and rushed over. Socks must've thought he was unconscious, and crouched down to make sure he was still breathing. the last thing Laff saw before actually passing out was Socks leaning down to kiss his cheek, crying."Please don't leave me, Laff, I need you..." And his vision went black.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Socks POVSocks knew something was up when the door slammed that late at night. He got scared when he had to hide in the closet. He watched Laff pretend he was asleep through the slits of the closet, and when he was carried out of the room, he was on the verge of breaking down the door and beating up the intruder. Laff must have sensed it because he looked Socks in the eye and mouthed stay there at him. Socks respected that and stayed in, but was tempted to come out again when he heard muffled groans of pain from downstairs. He heard the door slam closed and emerged from the closet. He ran downstairs and saw Laff laying in a heap. It was at that moment that Socks realized that he had a crush on him. It was all of the little things, like the quiet way he talked, or the way he tried to protect him when the door opened. He was at his side before he knew it, crying. He remembered some things from his short time in Boy Scouts and checked if he was breathing. Phew, he was. But his injuries looked terrible. Socks was scared he wouldn't make it. He began to cry. He couldn't lose Laff, his Laff. Laff went even limper and Socks kissed his cheek and carried him upstairs to try and treat his injuries. He worked all night, and Laff looked better by morning. Socks carried him to his bed and laid him down so he would be more comfortable. When he'd gotten the covers on him, he laid a soft kiss on his forehead. He grabbed some blankets from the foot of the bed and set up a makeshift bed on the couch. He woke up to find that Laff had woken up at some point and was sleeping on the other end of the couch. He put the blankets over him and started to make breakfast.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Laff POVLaff woke up to the smell of bacon. He was on the couch, which confused him for a minute until the events of last night came flooding back. He touched his cheek and grinned. He went into the kitchen to find Socks attempting to make breakfast. He came up behind him and asked,"Hey furry, making breakfast?" Socks jumped and nodded, focused on his waffles."I'm sorry about last night... now you know why we have sleepovers at your place," Socks turned around, waffles momentarily forgotten, and hugged Laff. Laff forgot about everything, only focusing on Socks. Socks kissed him on the cheek. Laff blushed."How'd you know?" He asked."What, you thought you were hiding it well?" Laff's whole face went red. He thought he'd done a good job hiding his crush. Socks saw his face and instantly went to reassure him."No, I figured it out last night," Laff sighed in relief. Socks flipped the last waffle and they ate. After that, they went upstairs and Laff loaned another outfit to Socks. They went out for ice cream and each explained their side of the story. When they got back, Socks's mom texted him, apologized, and begged him to come back. They agreed to meet in the locker room at school afterward. Laff waited impatiently, hoping it had gone alright. He heard a door slam and hid around a corner, hoping it was Socks."Laff? It went fine!" called out Socks's familiar voice. Socks spotted him and strutted towards him. They were so close to each other, close enough that Laff could close the gap. Socks leaned in, and they were about to kiss. Their lips met and it was pretty much the best kiss ever.
