"He... what!?"

"Yeah..."

"Thomas didn't mention that major detail! Neither did you!" I turned to look at Newt. "Why... why would he do that?"

"We're still not sure." Jeff told me.

"I'm pretty sure that it was because of the sting. It brought back terrible memories and maybe he just wanted to get his anger out." Newt reasoned.

"Yeah Newt, arson. Great way to cope, I agree." I didn't say it sarcastically, me and Newt attempted arson once, only in a bin. It was to get rid of some stuff we... didn't like. Let's just leave it there. "Anyway, I know how to get out so I think we should start planning that soon."

"Yeah. I agree." Newt nodded and wrapped an arm around my waist as we stood up. "See you later Jeff." He called behind us as we walked out.

The walk from the med hut to the homestead was in comfortable silence. We were just enjoying each other's presence.

"So, did we get into much trouble before the maze?"

"Oh, don't get me started! We committed arson, tried to escape, scared a hell of a lot of scientists and... that's about it." I wasn't going to tell Newt about the Flare. Not yet.

Time skip, two days later

The glade was chaos. Like, ultimate chaos. I was in charge of the same room as Newt was tonight.

"Okay, shhh, we just gotta wait out the Griever and hope for the best." I said. There was still a hole in the wall from where Gally ripped away the boards protecting the window. It has been covered back up but we had nearly run out of wood.

"Where is it?" Alex asked. Alex was the second youngest in the glade. Came up the month before Chuck.

"I'm not sure..." Newt replied. "Just stay quiet and try to get some sleep." Me and Newt were snuggled up together on the bed. Keeping each other warm and providing comfort for each other.

Click click whirr. It was followed by the sound of wood crunching and breaking as the Griever climbed along the wall of the homestead.

"Stay quiet, it'll leave us alone as long as it doesn't know where we are," I whispered. I motioned for everyone to move away from the window and I saw Alex starting to tear up. "Oh sweetheart, come here." I told him and he picked himself up and walked as quietly as possible over to the bed.

It wasn't quiet enough.

The Griever burst through the already demolished wall and grabbed Alex by the waist.

"No!" I shouted and lunged forwards. I grabbed hold of his arms and pulled back with all my strength. The Griever had a firm grip, but so did I. It jumped off the wall of the homestead taking me with it and Alex.

"Y/N!" I heard Newt call after me.

I yelped as I hit the floor of the glade. Pain flashed through my back as I hit the wounds that were still there. I had lost my grip on the young boy.

"Alex!" I shouted as I got up and carried on running after the Griever. Limping slightly.

"Y/N! Hel-" his voice cut off as he was sucked into the flesh of the creature completely.

I fell to my knees in dismay. Everything was quiet as I watched yet another one of my friends die. Tears threatened to spill but I pushed them down, after my vow of only letting a few people see me cry I wasn't about to break it.

"Thomas!" Minho shouted from behind me. I had barely registered that my brother had sprinted past me, following the last Griever before it reached the maze.

And before I knew it, he'd jumped on the bloody thing. Getting himself stung god knows how many times. He jumped off it just as quickly. Minho ran past me to his boyfriend and Newt came and checked if I was okay.

"Love, are you sure your okay?" He asked, concerned.

"I honestly don't know anymore." A single tear rolled down my cheek before I could stop it.

"Oh love." Newt pulled me into his chest and I just clung to his arm that was wrapped around my front.

"Quick! We need one of the Grief Serums!" I heard Minho shout. I recovered and got up to go and help Minho haul my now-collapsed-brother back to the homestead.

A few hours later and Tommy was awake again. He was in the pit along with Teresa.

"Hey, you okay?" Me and Teresa ask in union.

"What the hell were you thinking!?" Chuck asked him angrily.

"Wh-what happened?" He asked.

"Gally's taken control. Said we had a choice. Either join him, or get banished at sundown with you." Newt told him.

"And the others agreed to that?" Thomas groaned as he sat up.

Teresa looked down before speaking. "Gally has everyone convinced that... you're the reason all this has happened.

"Well he's been right so far." Thomas began.

"What the bloody hell do you mean?" I asked.

"This place isn't what you thought it was, not until Y/N got her memories back. It's not a prison it's a test. It all started when we were kids. They'd give us these challenges..."

"They were experimenting on us." I finish for him.

He nodded at me then carried on. "And then people started disappearing... every month, one after the other, like clockwork."

"Sending them up into the maze." Newt realised.

"Yeah, but not all of us." Thomas sighed.

"What do you mean?" Minho asked.

"Guys I'm one of them. The people who put you here I worked with them. I watched you guys for years! The entire time you've been here, I... I was on the other side of it. And so we're you..." he looked at Teresa with guilt in his eyes.

"What?" She asked, dumbfounded.

"Teresa we did this to them."

She shook her head as she said "no... it can't be true."

"It is, I saw it."

"Why would they send us up if we were with them?"

"It doesn't matter." They both looked at each other with tears brimming.

"He's right." Newt suddenly said and everyone turned their attention to him. "It doesn't matter. Any of it." He turned to look at me then grabbed my hand and turned back. "Because the people we were before the maze, they don't even exist anymore. These creators took care of that. But what does matter, is who we are now, and what we do right now. You went into the maze and you found a way out!"

"Yeah, but if I hadn't then... Alex would still be alive. As well as everyone else." Thomas looked down, possibly looking even guiltier then before. If that was possible.

"Maybe." I butted into the conversation and gave Newts hand a squeeze. "But I know if Alex were here he'd be telling you the exact same thing as we are right now. Pick your arse up, and finish what you started. Cause if we do nothing, that means Alex and everyone else died for nothing. And I can't have that."

"Okay... okay but we gotta get through Gally first."
