I'd stuck with Newt the entire way. We were near the back because of his limp. Everyone had taken a bag and a spear each.

E was near the middle with Chuck and Teresa, Minho and Thomas were up front and I was at the back to make sure the stragglers wouldn't get to far behind. Newt looked really nervous at being back in the maze as he hadn't since the accident. It had barely changed. The only difference was the fact that the ivy was longer. That's it.

"You alright?" I asked Newt.

"Mhm," he replied quietly. I grabbed his hand for comfort.

"Hey Y/N!" Chuck called as he slowed down to run next to me and Newt.

"Yeah? What is it?" I asked the excited boy.

"When we get out, the first thing I'm gonna do is look for my parents! And then I'm gonna introduce them to everyone. And then I'm gonna-" he broke off as he tripped and face planted the floor. Seconds later he was back up and running shouting 'I'm okay!' at everyone. "Okay, and then I'm gonna give them the little carving that I made!"

Me and Newt chuckled lightly at his excitement.

"Okay I'm gonna go back and keep E company!" And he was gone again.

"Y/N, I have something for you. As soon as we get out, I'll give it to you okay?" Newt squeezed my hand.

"Okay, stay safe then." I turned to our ex-leader "you alright Alby?" All I got in response was a slight nod.

Soon enough, we were by the section numbers.

"Keep it up guys we're almost there!" Thomas shouted to the group.

"You okay Newt? You're shaking." I grabbed both his hands and placed a small kiss on them. "I'll stay by your side the entire time, I promise."

"Thanks love."

"Are there Grievers?" Chuck asked.

"Yeah, one." Thomas replied.

"You take this Chuck, stay behind us." Minho handed him the key.

"It's okay, just stick with us." E motioned to her and Teresa as she tied her hair up and handed Teresa a hair tie.

Alby started walking forwards. "You guys run, I'll distract the Griever. Then you guys can make it out safely."

"What? Alby no you can't do-" I started but he gave me a look, stating that he'd made his decision and wasn't changing his mind.

"This way, nobody else has to die." Before we could say anything else, Alby ran towards the Griever.

I turned around not wanting to see how this ended. I grabbed Chuck and pulled him into a hug. I was still tall enough so I could put my chin on his head with ease, but I knew sooner or later that Chuck would overtake me in height.

The last thing we heard from our leader was him shouting "Make a run for it!" Us not wanting his death to be in vain, we made a mad dash for the exit. Only to be stopped short when another Griever came crawling up onto the bridge we had to cross.

Some of the gladers stopped short but others continued, shouting their hearts out for their fallen leader.

I held my spear tightly and made sure my hairspray was fastened in my belt.

Thomas met the Griever first, closely followed by Winston, Minho and another boy I didn't know very well.

They moved the fleshy creature to the side so that if we pushed it far enough back then it would fall off the side.
