Chapter 8: A "peaceful" trail ride

I dream of green eyes that night. I am a sucker for them. When I wake up, I want to go back to sleep. Back to his eyes. But I have to get up. No matter how much I distract myself with silly fantasies, this is a competition and I have to win.

When I arrive at the stables, I leave my sweatpants and normal clothes on. Before we start to train, I'm going on a nice long trail ride with Dream. Just to get warmed up.

The trail at this luxurious stable leads into the woods. It's a warm day for September. Nearly 70 degrees. I decide to ride bareback since it's fun and I feel too lazy to tack Dream up. As the other competitors jump and work themselves to exhaustion I walk Dream over to the wooded path that curves into the forest. Dream slips on a few sticks as we make our way up. I clench my fists around the rope that I put on Dream's neck. She continues to skid. After 20 minutes I'm so frazzled and I turn around and I'm lost.

I cry out in exasperation. The echo of my voice causes 3 logs to roll down the hill at an alarming rate. I scream. But it's too late. Dream loses her footing and we collapse,
