"There's no way in hell I'm sending my daughter to a school where mudbloods and blood-traitors are on the same level as pure bloods!" shrieked Adaline Shafiq at her enraged husband.
Jasmine sat in her room listening to them arguing, wincing when she heard glass shattering. Her parents had been fighting over which school to enroll her in as soon as she turned 11.
The passive-aggressive comments, back handed compliments and suffocating silence had been driving her mad. What was worse was that they hadn't asked once for her opinion! She was quite fed up indeed.
She didn't trick herself into thinking they cared about her or her future. They both only cared for what people would say and business opportunities. Not her. What future was there for her to look forward to anyway? She was supposed do well in school and give her parents something to brag about for 7 years and then come back home to marry a pureblood of their choice.
The past 3 years had turned our Jasmine into quite a desolate child. Loneliness does that to you, don't you think?
The girl didn't care about what school she was sent to. It wouldn't matter much. The school she had to go to wasn't a factor in her plans.
She was going to rebel. She wanted to be her own person.
Being sent to a boarding school miles away from home was just the spark she needed to start her fire. She was going to show her parents that they couldn't control her or her life anymore.

It was after a lot of yelling and even more broken furniture that Jasmine found herself curled up on the seat of The Hogwarts Express with a book for company. She had taken to reading as a cure for the boredom that kicked in as soon as her private tutoring was over for the day.
The train ride was almost halfway done when the spell her book had put her under was broken by two boys who sat down across from her and started talking loudly about quidditch teams and how the Wasps were way better than the Canons. She gritted her teeth and tried her best not to lose her temper. She dug her nails into her palms.
She went back to her book and tried to give it all of her attention. She was stuck on the same sentence for the past 10 minutes. She finally looked up after a loud whoop left one of the boy's mouths and they collapsed on each other while letting out boisterous laughter.
She lost it.
"Do you mind? I'm just trying to read a book in peace, but I can't because of you bumbling baboons who keep screeching like you in a bloody fish market. (A/N iykyk ;))Can you be quiet for even 10 minutes?" The girl finished yelling and tried to calm herself down.
The boys burst out laughing.
The girl was so confused. She didn't know what to say. She had never encountered people who were quite so shameless.
"Is there something funny?" She asked icily.
The boy whose hair looked like a bird's nest calmed down and told me sheepishly, " Well it's just that we made a bet on when you would tell us off and neither of us had expected it to be quite so spectacular."
The other boy who she felt like she vaguely remembered chimed in," Yeah, we thought that you were another Ravenclaw wannabe who would tell us to be quiet and then snobbishly go back to her book. We didn't expect you to blow up like that."
They looked calmed down and looked at me a bit cautiously trying to gauge how I would react.
"I don't understand what you mean by 'Ravenclaw wannabe'." She said coldly.
The boy with the messy hair said 'obnoxiously smart kid who always studies and reads for fun.' as if it was scandalous.
She scrunched up her nose and prepared to rant.
" I don't understand the house system. I find it misleading and quite frankly stupid. How is it so accepted that Slytherins are evil serial killers and Hufflepuff are kind pushovers who let you copy their homework? Slytherins have soft spots and Hufflepuff have dark sides. Doesn't everyone? No one is 1 dimensional. Why are we giving everyone a stereotype to uphold for the rest of their lives? Whenever people ask you for your house aren't they grouping you and linking you to a particular trait? If you say Ravenclaw you're immediately a nerd and if you say Hufflepuff you're immediately the 'nice one'. I just don't get it. My whole family has been Slytherins and if I'm not one that means I've committed treason. Why is your house so important?"
She ended her rant and looked at the boys expectantly.
They gaped back. Now they were the speechless ones.
"Anything from the cart dearies?" Came a voice from the door.
They looked at the plump lady in unison. She looked back at them, well aware that she had interrupted something.
The tension was diffused and they got their sweets. The boy with nice hair said," You said that being in Slytherin doesn't mean you're evil. Name any two Slytherins who aren't evil then." The other boy nodded eagerly. He was rather interested in what this weird girl had to say.
"Easy. You're a Black, right? You would know that Andromeda and Alphard Black are far from evil?" Jasmine said. She remembered who he was a few minutes ago. She had seen him a few times while talking to Reggie. Reggie talked about him a lot too. He idolized him.
She couldn't see why.
Both of the boys gaped at her. Finally, Sirius piped up." So that's why you looked familiar. Your Jasmine Shafiq. That French priss Reggie gushes about."
The girl was slightly flattered that Reggie spoke about her to Sirius but then her brain registered the second part of his sentence. She frowned and yelled, "I am not a priss!" The girl looked flushed from all the yelling. She pulled her trunk down, put her things inside, and pulled it outside. She looked back and snarled," Here's to hoping we're not in the same house." and dragged her trunk into the next compartment.
She wasn't proud of it but her temper got the best of her a bit too much. What could she say, the Shafiqs were as famed for their temper as the Blacks were for their hair.
The one with the unruly hair said," She's awes-"
Sirius cut him off." Awful. I know." The boy looked calm but was seething inside. He didn't know why this girl made him this angry but there was something about that infuriating smirk that made him want to slap it off her face. She had destroyed his pride and a Black's pride is their greatest flaw. That girl was reminding him more and more of him.
And he hated that.

I wanted this chapter to include the sorting and an introduction for all the girls but it got a bit too long. I don't want to be that author who uses 2 chapters just to introduce everyone and describe them in painstaking detail. I'm going to make the sorting, meeting all the girls, and their bonding in chapter 3. I hope you liked this chapter. I didn't like chapter one that much and I hope this was better. I've got the next 5 chapters planned out to some extent. Please comment on what you feel about it. Thank you!
