On July 6th, 1960 at 10:30 pm a blood-curdling scream echoed around an almost empty hospital room at a French hospital. After a nerve-racking 10 minutes, a screaming baby girl was born to Adaline and Percival Shafiq of French high society.  The Shafiqs were part of the sacred 28 but had put down roots in France for the last 3 generations. They had South Asian ancestry but were as good as French at this point.  They lived a comfortable life of prejudice and bigotry while supporting the eradication of muggle-borns and believing that those with 'dirty' blood didn't deserve to live amongst them.

Now this baby girl born into such a family, for lack of better words, wasn't wanted. She wasn't wanted by her young mother who had much more she wanted to do with her life than raise a baby. She wasn't wanted by her father who had wanted a boy to take his place in the ministry. She wasn't wanted by anyone she was thrust upon simply because of what she was thought to be. She was supposed to be a perfect pureblood who lived up to the Shafiq name.

The saddest part was that she knew. The little girl was told that she was unwanted ever since she could walk. A burden to her parents and everyone else she depended on. She was taught from a young age how to become a good little pureblood princess. From how she dressed to how she talked, everything was taught by her the best tutors.

She was groomed for only one thing. To be the perfect pureblood woman. A perfect daughter who made her parents proud at every ball. A perfect student who knew 5 languages and passed everything with flying colors. A perfect wife who could take care of the household and most importantly bear and groom another set of pureblood children to be just like her.

Perfection was key. She was taught by her mother the most important thing every woman was supposed to know.

The mask.

The mask they were all supposed to wear at every event, at every ball, and at every single place where their surname was respected. They would laugh when they were expected to, speak when spoken to, and always make their bloodline proud. Whenever cracks appear, you excuse yourself and get yourself together. One slip-up could be fatal.

                                                                               -*-*-*-*-

In 1968, when the girl was 8 years old, there was a corruption investigation in the French Ministry of Magic. Many high-up officials fled to Britain before they were found out. Percival Shafiq was one of them. He got a transfer appeal and he and his family quickly moved to a beautiful summer house they owned in Great Britain.  The little girl was introduced into Britain's high society where she made her first friend, Regulus Black.

She met him while discreetly moving towards the buffet while her parents were otherwise occupied. While inching towards the tea cakes she felt a small figure slam into her and throw her into a tall man's legs. She quickly stood up so she wouldn't cause a scene and glared at the person who pushed her.  Her eyes met a small boy with a terrified look on his face and a mop of black shiny hair that looked silkier than hers.

She opened her mouth to politely tell the boy off but he beat her to it and quickly started a stream of apologies and promises to make it up to her. The nine-year-old was amused. Her mind quickly came up with a way to make the most out of this.

She cut the boy off and said, " Look. It's fine. My dress isn't wrinkled and I'm not hurt in the slightest. Buuuut....." She trailed off.

The boy said hastily," Yes?" with a worried look on his face.

" I do feel a bit hungry," she said a bit sheepishly.

The boy blinked twice, confused while looking like he was regretting ever coming to this godforsaken party in the first place.

" Don't look at me like that." she snapped. " Now, do you see that tray of tea cakes over there?" she pointed to a table not far from where they stood.

The boy meekly nodded.

" Bring them here for me and you're forgiven."

The boy looked at her in disbelief while she looked back at him with a poker face.

"Ok," he said cautiously, as if he was waiting for a punchline, and walked over to the table, picked the tray up, and walked towards her. She beamed and said "Perfect! Now follow me" The girl led him to a crevice in the wall partially covered by shawls and ribbons. " And now we feast!" She said with an eager smile on her face.

"We?" The boy said with a confused face.

"Yes, we. Unless you don't want to?" She looked a bit hurt.

The boy quickly reassured her that it was nothing like that and they both started eating the cakes one by one while talking to each other about random topics. She found out that his name was Regulus Black and the reason he had bumped into her was because he was looking for his older brother.

Suddenly she said "Say Reggie, do you want to be my friend? I've never had one before and you seem cool enough ....." She trailed off not knowing what to say.

The boy warded off the awkward atmosphere by beaming at her and saying, "Of course, I've never had a friend either!"

Sirius and she were vaguely aware of each other. To her he was 'Reggie's jerk of a brother' and to him, she was the 'French priss'. They agreed to be civil to each other but not friends.

Never friends.

Her name was Jasmine Shafiq and little did she know that they would be much closer than friends in the future.
