Sirius Black was snogging Gwenog Jones.
It wasn't unexpected I suppose since they were dating on and off before the end of fourth year but I couldn't shake off the lingering annoyance I felt at it. I know I have no right to anger at his relationship status but I couldn't look at where they sat hand-in-hand without an ugly feeling trying to claw its way through my body. I sighed and looked around at my friends and noticed Mary looking at me strangely.
"What's up, Mary? Why are you looking at me like you know my deepest darkest secrets?" I said with forced nonchalance.
"Nothing much, Jas." She said with a smile that looked eerily like Mother's.
I shook my head and plastered a grin on my face.
"So Lily, I've heard that Potter's planning a musical proposal tonight," I said with a smirk.
"Not you too Jas, Remus was telling me about it too. It's got to be bad if even he seemed amused." She said with a grimace.
"Look on the bright side, Lils", said Marlene with a grin.
"I don't this there is one Marls", I interrupted.
"Of course, there is Jas! Haven't you wanted to see Potter play the guitar terribly?" Said Marlene with a mocking smile. "Oh please I doubt he would play the guitar. I've always wanted to hear him sing though. Do you think Lily should prepare to be serenaded?" I butted in with a laugh.
"Who are you two giggling about?" I heard a voice from behind us.
I turned to see James Potter slide in next to us.
"Speak of the devil", Marlene said while shifting over to give them more space.
"You lot were gossiping about me!?" Said James after gasping and placing his hand on his heart in the most dramatic way he could.
"Don't get your hopes up Potter, you're not interesting enough to gossip about. However..." I said while leaning in.
"However?" He asked excitedly after scooting closer to me. "I hear that you'll be serenading our Lily tonight?" I whispered, almost as excited.
'What? Who told you?" he said, standing up in a jerky movement. His ears were turning a suspicious shade of red and he was looking at Lily hopefully as if he thought her reaction would give him all the answers he sought.
"Wait was it Sirius? I know you snogged him over Summer but you of all people should know better than to believe his frankly disgusting lies," he said theatrically while standing on his tip-toes to look intimidating. He nearly tripped and in his attempt to avoid falling, he missed the sudden shift in the air.
Lily and Marlene looked affronted and Mary just looked at her with a knowing look in her eyes. Hestia walked over from where she was sitting with Fabian and sat next to James. "Why is everyone so quiet?" She asked breezily. Hestia was one of the bravest people she had ever met but dear lord, she could never read a room. Everyone snapped their heads toward her and Marlene stage whispered, "Jasmine shagged Black over summer."
"WHAT!?" shrieked Hestia, jolting up and looking at me accusingly.
"Stop exaggerating Marlene! I did not shag him!" I hissed while looking around to see if anyone overheard. Much to my chagrin and everyone else's excitement, Sirius was looking at us with pure bewilderment in his eyes.
"A likely story Shafiq, me thinks the lady doth protest too much," said James with the same stage whisper.
"I agree with Potter, you're obviously hiding something Jas," Lily said while scooting closer to our tiny circle.
