sorry for not updating in a while. hope this makes it up to you. enjoy!
Weeks went by and the news of Jasmine's howler grew stale. what was all people would talk about had turned into a few whispers here and there. Hogwarts was hungry for gossip. So when the first murmurings of a 'dark lord' came, it was all people could talk about.
While Jasmine was glad her embarrassment was forgotten, this fresh news was rising unwanted feelings in her. Everyone thought it was another pureblood supremacist who would be arrested in a few months at most but the purebloods at school knew better.
If it was some petty murderer her parents wouldn't have written to her for the first time since her howler. None of their parents would even bother to bat an eyelash. A word of praise here or a discussion there but he would be soon forgotten, but on the first of November 1971, almost the entire table of Slytherins got an emerald green letter that had a peculiar symbol of a snake and a skull. This was to be expected but the anomaly was that two lone griffindors too, were graced with the arrival of this strange letter.
It was too perfectly timed to be a coincidence and they all knew that.
All of the Slytherins looked uneasy and Jasmine and Sirius looked at each other with similar looks of dis-ease. The snakes they could get, but why them? Had they not committed treason enough to be spared from that life?
A burly seventh year got over his shock and started trying to open his letter. He discovered with a start that the letter was mostly blank except for a single line that was enough to run a shiver down his spine.
'the dark lord calls you' in blood-red ink
By Halloween, most people were trying to play this off as an unfunny prank or one-off thing but the seeds of fear had been planted and were starting to take root. Everyone who got a letter was walking on eggshells until winter break when most of them made up their minds to confront their parents.
Jasmine in particular was quite anxiously
counting down the days till she could board the train back. She didn't know what she was to say nor did she know what would happen. Her parents may as well chalk this up to childhood rebellion but what of this new dark lord? Would she be expected to join this strange cult?
On the first day of December, Jasmine sat with the other girls and listened to them debate on the best quidditch position while throwing in half-hearted remarks on how chasers were superior.
Her mind was still pondering what was going to happen during the break. She threw a glance at Black who was sitting with the other 3 on the other side of the table. She watched him throw his head back and let out that ridiculous laugh of his and almost fall off his chair. He looked at her and looked away with a confused look on his face. She looked back at her food, not caring that she had been caught in the act.
She tried involving herself in the conversation but her mind was elsewhere.
She envied him
She was jealous of Sirius Black and she finally admitted it to herself.
She was jealous of the fact that the shackles of the life she so badly wanted to escape had fallen away so easily and didn't scar him the way they did her. He was radiant, so happy in his new life that he fit in so well with these people. He had replaced his family with people who actually cared about him.
She knew that he struggled too and his life was not all she thought it to be but she allowed the ugly head of jealousy to rear its head in her stomach.
'Hey guys, I'm feeling a bit tired today, I might turn in early. See you all in the morning, G'night.' She said while letting out a pathetic excuse of a fake yawn.
