It had been a couple of weeks and life was well. I had managed to balance both friendships and avoid Black. He had tried to talk to me once, no doubt because of how insufferable James could get, but I pretended not to hear him and started talking to Remus about Muggle literature. I don't think he noticed. (A/N he did)
September had slipped away, and the beginning of October was marked by the first Quidditch game of the season. Hufflepuff was playing Griffindor and house rivalries were running rampant. The boys had played a prank on the other houses by spiking all the drinks with a potion that caused hallucinations which led to people running around, screaming while trying to fight off the non-existent monsters.
It was safe to say that all the houses were supporting Hufflepuff.
Gwenog and Black were on the outs again because of rising pressure from James, who was the recently appointed captain, to stop 'fraternizing with the enemy' and put more effort into practice. Jones, who was the Hufflepuff captain, was starting to be suspicious of Sirius and had dumped him in one of their public screaming matches to focus on 'beating our sorry arses'. This led to James and Sirius making the team practice twice a day and double their efforts to win which caused the team to strike and say that they would only play in the game if they ceased their tyranny. Or so said Benjy who was walking with his arm around her shoulder while catching her up on all the latest Quidditch gossip.
"Where did you even hear this from, Ben? A third year?"
"How dare you belittle my information! And it was a sixth year," He said with an offended sniff. I laughed and said," Why do I even need to know this? It's not like I need it to watch the match." He gasped and looked at me with mock disappointment and snarked, "Well now if your team stops playing in the middle of the game, you'll know why." I couldn't hold back a giggle and he looked at me with an offended glance and I burst out laughing. Things were easy with Benjy. I would laugh from the bottom of my stomach and not have a reason. I didn't need a reason. He just made me happy.
"Oooh, is this what I think it is Jas?" Came James's voice from the other side of me. I fought back a blush and looked over, saying, "I don't know Jay, what do you think this is?" He didn't answer but just wiggled his eyebrows and pouted his lips ridiculously. I giggled again and told him to shove off to his boyfriend to which he grinned and ran off to find Sirius. I smiled and looked up to see that Benjy was already looking at me. It was strange, the look in his eyes, it left so much unsaid but I managed to understand it perfectly. I let out a shaky breath and stepped closer. I could feel his voice tremor when he started speaking.
"Jasmine, I-" He was cut off by a big black dog.
The dog jumped on him and growled in his face before walking over and sitting in between us. Benjy let out a high-pitched scream and shrieked, "It's the fucking Grim!" I looked over at the dop again and noticed that it looked far too cute to be a harbinger of death. I crouched down and tentatively pat him on the head. I half-flinched, expecting it to bite or at least growl but he barked excitedly and licked my hand. I relaxed and started rubbing his head and laughed when he started wagging his tail.
"Stay away from it Jas! My uncle saw one and died in days!" Came Benjy's panicked voice from next to me. He laid a hand on my shoulder and tried to pull me away but I shifted away and cooed, "Look at him, Ben! He's so cute!" I could hear him sigh from above me and say, "Whatever you say, If you die it's on you and you alone!" I laughed and looked at him. "You're cute too, honey," I said suggestively. He laughed but I could see his ears turn pink. The dog whined and leaned into my hand.
"Alright, we really should be on our way," I said while standing up. "Who do you think owns it?" Benjy asked. "Dogs aren't allowed as pets so probably not a student," I thought aloud.
"Snuffles? Snuffles?" James was screaming while walking towards them feverishly.
"Was he bothering you two? I apologize, he will be dealt with." James said with an angry glint in his eyes.
"Woah! What do you mean dealt with?" I said while putting my arms around the dog who for some reason looked awfully smug. I shrugged it off and looked up and James who looked like he was about to kill someone.
"Nothing! I'll take care of it, just hand over the mutt!"
"Well if you say so!" Benjy said and stepped away.
"Wait, no! James needs to tell me how exactly he's planning on taking care of this! Look at the poor darling! It practically shaking in fear!" I said with a look over at the poor dog.
"Oh yeah, it's shaking all right. Shaking with laughter!" James muttered under his breath.
"Snuffles, Come here!" James demanded. Snuffles whined again and snuggled closer to me.
"Aww, look at the poor thing, Jay. Where's your humanity?"
"Oh, if only you knew," He said darkly.
"Look, Jas, I know you want what's best for Snuffles here, but it's almost time for the match. I'm pretty sure James needs to get to the pitch. Besides, James can't harm a fly!" He pulled me up and started nudging me towards the pitch.
"Thanks, Fenwick, I owe you one," James said before growling something that we couldn't hear to the dog. I looked back at the dog once before joining Benjy in walking toward the pitch.

The match took longer than normal but Griffindor won after our seeker, Layla Patterson, caught the snitch just in the nick of time and managed to win the match by a margin of 50 points. There was supposed to be a party in the common room but I could feel my head pounding so I decided to take a walk around the school and visit the kitchens. I couldn't figure out how I felt about Benjy. He tried to talk to me after the game but I brushed him off and said I needed to find James. I sighed and started walking up to the astronomy tower. No one would be up there and I needed silence.
Benjy is a great friend. He makes me laugh and he's always been there for me when I need him. Ever since third year, we've been friends, siblings almost, and I don't want to lose that. Looking back, I don't think I've ever seen him in a romantic light. He's always been one of the girls to me, and I know that we could try to make a relationship work but I also know that we're not the perfect ones for each other. I just wanted to feel desirable. A quiet little voice in my head told me, Sirius made you feel desirable. I crushed it immediately. Sirius Black didn't like me. And I didn't like Benjy. I would never feel butterflies, I would never feel a spark. I would never be in love with him.
Now there was the matter of telling him that. I groaned and rubbed my eyes. Why was love so bloody complicated?
I pushed the door to the Astronomy tower open and breathed in the fresh air. The moment was ruined by a couple making out passionately behind the wall. I groaned again and turned around to leave before I stopped in my tracks. I knew that voice. I walked around the wall in a haze and was met with a sight I never thought I would see.
It was Marlene.
And Gwenog Jones.
Shagging.
What the fuck had life come to.
A/N: Hope yall enjoyed! I'll be back soon! Did anyone guess right?
