12)A New Year

Wincing at the loud voices, I rested my head on Marlene's shoulder while sipping at my mug of coffee. We had gone to sleep at around 3 am and Lily was the only one who looked awake and functioning. She looked at us disapprovingly while stirring sugar into her tea.

"Don't you look so cheerful this morning." came a loud voice from behind my head. I groaned and looked at Marlene pleadingly. She glared at James for me and ran a hand absent-mindedly through my hair. "I don't want to go to Potions first thing in the morning!" I whined to no one in particular. "None of us do, Shafiq. You're not special." Came the still-too-loud voice of James Potter but this time from next to me.

"Sod off, Potter. Why are you even here?" I asked while spreading butter on my toast. "Yeah, why are you here Potter? Black looks awfully lonely without his boyfriend." Said Marlene with a half grin. "Funny you should mention him actually, he kept me up all night because he's convinced that we were talking about him," James said with a glance over to the rest of the Marauders. Sirius was indeed looking over at James with an accusing glare.

"We were talking about him though," said Hestia with her customary eyebrow raise. "Yes, but that's not the point." "What is the point?" asked Mary with a confused glance over at Sirius. "The point is that we should probably milk this for all it's worth!" he exclaimed. I looked at him with a smirk and moved closer. "What do you have in mind, Potter?" "Well as you know, I'm not very dramatic but I think it would be funny if we-"

So it was on that note that less than a minute later Jasmine and James jumped up with twin gasps. They looked at Sirius and then stage-whispered nonsense before dramatically sweeping off leaving most of the table in confusion.

It was a couple of hours later and James and Jasmine had skipped Potions and were currently sitting under a tree near the shrieking shack. They took a passage to Hogsmeade and bought sweets which they were eating while sprawled out on the grass.

"So, Jas, now that I can call you that, do you ever wish you had a sibling?"

"Of course, I do. It's so lonely without one."

"Well yeah but what if you don't like them?"

"I'm pretty sure you have to love your sibling, James."

"But what about Sirius and his little brother. They don't get along. Wouldn't it be terrible to have a sibling that ends up in Slytherin?"

"They do get along. It may not always show, but they love each other. I've known Reggie for years and he's so kind, James. I know you'll always see him as Sirius's Slytherin brother, but he is so much more than his house. He's so sweet and he deserves so much better than the family and the life he has now."

"But what's the use of loving someone under those circumstances?"

"What circumstances?"

"You know better than anyone that they'll never have all that "blissful happiness". Things will never work out."

"Well sometimes love isn't enough, but it still makes the pain worthwhile," I said while getting up and holding a hand out for James who took it and got up. I tried to brush off the grass stains, but they didn't budge.

"You know, I've always wanted a big brother, Jamsie-boy," I said, throwing an arm around him.

"Funny, because I've always wanted a little sister to torment," he said with a grin.

"You know, keep this up and Lily might actually reconsider!"

"You really think so?!"

James started an excited tirade of his plans to win his Lily over and I laughed and nodded along while I walked with him. It was a new year, maybe it was time to make new friends too.
