Erwin sat on his horse as the orders was set to open the gates, the day was the day his formation would be put to the test. "We will now begin our 23rd reconnaissance mission! Onwards!" Keith orders charging forward. The Scouts exit the gates, their horses thundering out the gates. Grim watch from her office as they took off, "Good luck out there." She quietly said.

Levi, Furlan, and Isabel followed suit behind their Squad Leaders. As the trio exit the tunnel they were greeted by the bright sunlight and blue skies that wasn't block by walls. "Incredible!" Isabel shouts with excitement. "Yeah, not bad." Levi comment while he stare at the birds flying high and free.

As the trio admire the open world Lin came forward, "What are you doing!? Stay focused, We're not here to sightsee." She told the group. "There's no telling when we will see a Titan." Isabel didn't take her warning seriously, "If we do see one, we'll clean it right up for you!" "Idiot!" Isabel close her eyes at the scolding, "You're only saying that because you never seen on in person before. You have no idea how many good soilders have been killed." Lin said.

Just as fast Lin said those words two Titans came out of no where, just as surprising Isabel and her friends kept their word and took out the Titans before their Squad Leaders took care of the problem for them. "How was that Levi?" Furlan asked with a big grin on his face, "We took down a Titan by ourselves!" "We did it Big Bro!" Levi couldn't' believe that his friends were a lot more skilled than he gave them credit for. "Yeah, you did." He felt extremely proud of his gang.

Flagon and Lin blink at the trio with wide open mouths, "Squad Leader, those three-" Lin couldn't finish her sentence. "Yeah, I'm beginning to understand why Erwin was so insistent on having them join." Flagon couldn't even deny the trio of rats did an amazing job taking down two Titans.

At that moment Erwin rode up on the group, "I agree." Levi, Furlan, and Isabel turn around their small victory temporarily ruined. "Considering it was your first time it was pretty impressive." Erwin started off nicely, "But you used to much gas, you need to conserve out here." He sternly told the trio.

Furlan and Isabel was about to say something when Levi stopped them. "You're telling me to take priority of my equipment over my comrades?" He asked in disbelief. Erwin stare back intently, "I'm saying, you're making a lot of unnecessary movements. Are you having doubts?" He ask Levi narrowing his eyes. Levi didn't know where Erwin was going with his questions, "If you are, that'll be the death of you very soon." Erwin gave a crept warning before riding off.

Isabel finally had enough of the man, "That Asshole! He better watch it when he's alone." She says. Furlan shush her, "Quiet, he might hear you." Levi continue to stare at the back of Erwin head with wide eyes. It wasn't long after that, the rain started to flood in concealing any sounds along with limiting the Scouts vision.

Erwin rode on his horse taking notes of the heavy rain and what it could mean regarding the mission. "Erwin, should we reduce our speed?" Keith asked. "Yes, though I would like to get away from the open area as quickly as possible." Erwin told him.

The trio of thugs rode by themselves, "Damn, I didn't think it could rain so hard." Isabel commented feeling heavy rain for the first time in her life. "We won't be able to make out any raging Titan in these conditions." Furlan said as his vision was being affected by the rainy condition. "This is our chance, we will us this cover to get close to Erwin." Levi told his friends.

Furlan and Isabel were shock to hear their leader was ready to move, "Levi!" "Are we going for it Bro?" The two asked. "Yeah, but it'll be suspicious if all three of us broke away. I'll go alone." Levi told them. Furlan looked around as the heavy fog started closing in, "True, it's probably best not to carelessly move around." "We got no choice, we're counting on you Big Bro! Go and secure our surface citizenship" Isabel encourage with a large smile.

Levi nod, "If anyone ask, tell them I went scouting ahead." Furlan and Isabel nod their head. Levi kicked his horse to go faster, looking behind him he see his friends waving with Isabel smiling and Furlan nodding to him, both of their trust in their leader cold heartedly. The fog concealed his friends as he rode onwards, looking forward he never once heard or seen the Titans making their way to his squad.

Levi rode fast and hard almost diving horse first down a cliff side. Halting his horse he looked on with wide eyes at the carnage in front of him. "What the hell happened here?" He asked himself string at the dead bodies of the Scouts. Black Flair shot in the sky indicating an abnormal Titan, he quickly made his way to the direction when his horse slipped on someone severed arm.

Levi wince after being thrown from his horse, his eyes widen seeing Isabel head at his feet. The Titan that was nearby was eating something, it spotted Levi as he clamp down on the body revealing it was Furlan. Levi couldn't believe what he witness, both of his friends who counted on him, who relied on him for their freedom was now dead. That put him in a rage he never felt before.

Erwin along with Keith and their Squad rode up to the scene seeing Levi, the lone survivor of his squad. "So, you're the sole survivor." Erwin state the obvious, "How pathetic." Levi glare at the man with so much rage and hatred. He charge towards him only to have Erwin stop his blade with his bare hand, "I'll kill you! That's why I'm here!" Levi spat at him.

Erwin only stare already knowing the whole game plan, when he revealed to Levi that he knew all along what their mission was. Levi couldn't believe that all this and his friends death was for nothing. Levi was about to shut down emotionally and mentally, when Erwin pulled him back just before he let go. "Don't, you'll regret it." Erwin said to Levi.

Levi stare up at him, "Memories of regret will only dull your future decisions. And than you'll allow others to make choices for you. All that's left for you than is to die." Erwin stated staring down at Levi with a stern face, "No body can foretell the outcome. Each decision you make holds meaning only by affecting your next decision."

Erwin than let out a small smile. "At least, that's what a wise woman once said to me."Levi gasp knowing exactly who he was talking about. Erwin stern face replace the smile, "We will continue with the mission. I expect you to come with me Levi." He turn around jumping on his horse riding away from the man to make his own decision. As his horse walk he spot Flagon half eaten body, he stared down at him than rode away without a second glance.

Grim stared out her window that night in her office when a knock was heard, "Enter." She had her arms behind her back as her door opened than shut. "Did you know?" Levi asked. "Did I know what?" Grim ask back. "Did you know Grim, about...everything. This bullshit mission, this whole thing! Did you know?" Levi desperately asked.

Grim sigh turning around, "No. Like I said, everything was Erwin idea. I just approved of the decision." Grim walk over to him standing in front of her distraut friend, "I heard what happened out there. I'm very sorry about your friends." She took his hands in hers holding them tightly, "I know right now it's painful." She grip his hand, "But trust me, it doesn't get less painful." Levi stare at her, "But we must, keep searching for something to fight for. To keep going, that gives us the strengths and the ability to move on. To remind us our comrade deaths don't be in vain." Grim softly said to her old friend.

She smile at him seeing the pain in his eyes, "Please don't give up Levi. Find something to fight for and hold on to it. I promise your friends death won't be in vain. Not so long I'm breathing. Don't give up." When she pulled away Levi notice she placed something in his hand, it was his citizenship card.

Levi stare down at it in disbelief, he couldn't believe that he truly was a citizen above ground. He felt his eyes tear up, he only wished for his friends to be beside him during this moment they fought so hard for.

Grim smile as the tears flow down his face silently, while Levi clench his citizenship that represented his freedom. "Thank you." He cried. Grim nod her head putting her hand on his cheek, "You earned it, Levi."

The two stood in her office as Levi continue to cry. He cried out of joy, anger, sadness, relief. All the emotions he was feeling at once came to the surface, one thing that did matter to him the most was the fact his old childhood friend is the one that handed him his freedom. Looking up Levi stare into Grim eyes, he knew then and there what his purpose for fighting would be. That was to keep Grim safe and alive. So humanity can have a chance at surviving, with Grim leading the Scouts he knew he would always be there to support her. Even if she married a bastard.
