•No one's POV•
It's been a week. Adrien still hasn't shown up. Marinette tries to pay attention to the slide show on the screen, but her mind keeps running away.
Where is he? It's not like him to be gone for this long...
In the classroom on the opposite side of the school, Alice is having the same problem, but she's much more subtle. Her pencil flies across the paper, marking question after question. And yet, this assignment is the last thing she's thinking about.
Why do I get the feeling something is wrong...
Even after the last class of the day ended, they both still have their trains of thought going at full speed. At this point, Alice wants to pull her hair out in frustration. She practically sprints out of the classroom, only to feel her body collide with someone. She blinks twice and groans when she sees what happened.
"I'm sorry Daphne," she says, picking up the books and papers Daphne dropped. Her classmate raises an eyebrow when she sees the look on her face.
"You okay?" she asks, putting a strand of her black hair behind her ear. "You're kinda out of it."
Alice nods quickly. "Yeah, sorry. I just have a lot of things to do. I'll see you around."
She doesn't even wait for Daphne's answer, and rushes towards the locker room on the first floor. One row, two rows, and eventually, the locker she's looking for.
"We need to talk."
Alice and Marinette slightly chuckle, realizing that they had spoken at the same time. Alice takes a step back and sighs. "Sorry," she says. "Today just hasn't been that great. I've been really unfocused."
"True. But any day Lila doesn't show up is a good day. No offense," Marinette adds, closing her locker.
Alice narrows her eyes. "Wait. You didn't see Lila today?"
Marinette shakes her head, a smile creeping onto her face. "No, I didn't. Where is she anyway?"
"She left before me this morning, and I haven't seen her all day," Alice replies. "She doesn't seem like the kind of person who would skip class."
"Well there's a first time for everything," Marinette says with a shrug. "Do you want to walk home with me?"
Alice slowly nods and follows the bluenette out of the building. They walk in silence, neither of them forming the right words in their heads. However, the bustle and chatter of Paris is enough to keep them distracted, if only for a few minutes.
And just like that, the two hear a shriek coming from a few streets away.
They exchange quick glances and run towards the direction of the panicked voices, Alice nearly touching Marinette's heels. Whether it's just fear, a reflex, or a mix of the two, they know one thing: they were both right when they thought something was wrong.
They skid to a stop on the sidewalk, feet on fire, but neither of them are even a little tired. Marinette takes a breath as she looks around her, taking in the situation.
The road in front of them is like a broken mirror, cracks covering the ground in all directions. Some are deeper than others, but either way, it looks nearly impossible to walk on this street without tripping and hurting yourself. Large pieces of road and gravel spread onto the sidewalk, and Alice steps closer to Marinette to avoid stepping on anything.
"At least everyone got away from here," Marinette notes. The area around is deserted. As usual, most people abandoned the scene at the sight of trouble. But what exactly happened?
