"I'm kind of surprised. I expected Ray or Y/N to find the bookplates, since they read a lot." Norman said as we walked down the stairs. It was true that I was quite the bookworm. I always enjoyed reading books. Fantasy and adventure especially. The plot of the books whisked be away to other places, and made me feel like I was actually in the book.
"But how the heck did you manage to find them, Emma?" Ray asked. Emma didn't usually spend her free time in the library. She was usually playing outside.
"Yeah, why were you in the library?" I added. The redhead looked over her shoulder, as she was in the front of the group. I walked beside Ray, who had his hands in his pockets.
"Oh, it wasn't me who noticed them." We turned the corner as we listened to her talk.
"It wasn't?" I was interested. I tried to think of anyone other than Ray and I who read a lot. Anna reads books kind of often. It could be her. Or...
"Phil was actually the one who showed me," Emma said. This surprised me. I always knew Phil was smart, especially for his young age, but it was still surprising. The two boys seemed to be surprised as well.
"Really?" Norman asked. We continued walking down the hallway, our shoes tapping on the hardwood floor. Emma and I wore our knee-high boots, which were made of a soft leather material. It was difficult to learn how to tie them at first, but now it's easy. We always help the little kids in the morning when they're having trouble getting ready.
"Mhm! A kid's book he was reading happened to be Mr. Minerva's," A couple of little kids ran by us, giggling. "And there was a part in it that had morse code, so..." Emma stopped and stared at the dining hall. I noticed it a second after she did.
"Don and Gilda!" Emma exclaimed. Norman poked his head out of a door.
"They're not here either!"
I stiffened, hoping that they didn't do what I thought they did. Emma suddenly turned, obviously worried. "Could they be..."
"No..." Even after we had warned them, could they have still gone anyway? We kept looking around, trying to find them.
Soon enough, we saw them walking down the hallway with guilt in their eyes. But their outward expressions were different. Don looked angry, and Gilda looked heartbroken. Oh gosh...
"Oh, good. I thought-" Emma stopped as Ray started walking up towards them, with me quickly following.
"Where were you?" Ray asked in a cold tone. I glared at them as well. We were getting information out of them, no matter what.
~~~~~~~
Later in the night, when everyone else was asleep, the six of us met in the dining hall. With only the light from a few lanterns, and the soft glow of the moon, it was certainly ominous.
Ray and I leaned on a wall near the table where the rest of them were sitting. Gilda and Don's eyes were averted, clearly guilty.
"Well?" Ray asked from beside me. The both of us were never exactly patient.
"We were just in Mom's secret room, okay?" Don admitted. I was a bit surprised that he said it so straightforward.
"But how?!" Emma was scared. Gilda finally looked up, guilt riddling her face.
"You see, Don stole the key, and-"
"He what?!" Emma was clearly nervous, shocked, and a bit betrayed. Well, I say clearly, but maybe I just pick up on emotions easily.
