Ray and I watched Emma run down the hallway before we both turned to Norman. We were both pissed at them for lying.
"What was that?" Ray asked angrily.
"Yeah, why'd you lie to them?!" I matched Ray's tone.
"Not to your liking?" Norman replied calmly. Of course not! Why on earth would you do that?!
"So we can help everyone? You should have told them they died!" He raised his voice. I flinched. Not because he raised his voice, but because of the words.
"We did what we had to do so they'd join us." Norman explained. I was still angry.
"And what if they aren't spies?! A pretty cruel thing to do to someone." I argued.
"Conny is dead! You shouldn't have given them false hope!" Ray said, grabbing my shaking hand. I noticed that he was shaking as well.
"They deserve the truth... When exactly are you going to tell them? Can you?" I insisted. Norman turned to face me.
"Maybe when the time is right. We still have to assume they might be spies. So then we should lay a trap." Norman was calm as ever. It amazed me.
"A trap?" Norman turned away again.
"I'm going to tell them where the rope is hidden."
I side glanced at Ray. Ray grumbled. Norman turned back to us again.
"I'll tell Don that it's behind my bed. Gilda will know that it's in the second-floor bathroom ceiling. And at that point, how's Mom gonna find out? We'll just have to see." Norman said. Smart plan...Wait.
"But what if the ropes are both gone... but yet neither one is the spy?" I pointed out.
"I've already considered that," Norman assured me.
"Seems like you're prepared for everything," Ray said. I could tell that Ray was trying to figure out how and when he would steal the ropes.
"Yeah, I told you. The key here is to outwit." Norman explained. He then walked off. Ray turned to me and pulled me back into the library.
~~~~~~~
"So which rope are you planning on stealing?" I asked. He looked off to the side, thinking.
"The one behind Norman's bed probably." He said. I had my doubts. What if Norman is planning something? What if he suspects Ray?
"If he finds out that it's you, should I act like I didn't know, or should I tell them the truth?" I asked. Ray turned back to me.
"Act ignorant." He decided. I was a bit disappointed. That means that I have to pretend to act mad.
"You know that means I have to pretend to be hurt, right?" I said. Ray averted his eyes slightly.
"Yeah... we'll tell them eventually though. Don't worry, ok?" He reassured me. I smiled a bit. Then my smile dropped. I acted impulsively, stepping forward and wrapping my arms around him. He looked at me with wide eyes.
"Y/N...?" He asked quietly. I was shaking a bit. "Y/N, what's wrong?" He asked, now worried.
"I'm freaking terrified..." I whispered. "What if we don't escape? What if this is all for nothing and-"
"We will escape. Y/N, if it's the last thing I do, I will make sure that you get out of here." (A/N hmmm... iNtErEsTiNg WoRdiNg) I smiled then, stepping back. Ray's eyes still held a bit of concern in them.
"Thanks, Ray," I said. He smiled and nodded. We went to our rooms to sleep.
~~~~~~~
I was in my bed, pretending to be asleep. I knew that Emma was as well, and we both were waiting to see if Gilda would leave. We suddenly heard the sound of a bed creaking. Gilda. My head was facing the door. I saw the shadow on the floor first, before catching sight of the green-haired girl quietly walking towards the door. I wasn't actually expecting her to do anything, knowing that Ray was the spy.
She opened the door, walked out of the room, and closed it behind her. I sat up in my bed, making eye contact with the bright green eyes that belonged to Emma. I gestured that she should go, not me. I needed time to plan how I was going to react when they find out Ray's the spy. I had a feeling that Norman has been suspecting him for a while.
Emma nodded and left the room to look for Gilda. I quietly opened my drawer and took out a small plain compact mirror. I practiced my facial expressions. I was glad that no one could see me, because I looked seriously ridiculous.
~~~~~~~
The next morning, I helped wash clothes with Ray and Norman.
"So... Gilda left the room last night, and Emma followed her. Turns out that Gilda wasn't the spy. That's a relief." I explained as we scrubbed the white clothing.
"I'm curious. Why do you think the traitor's betraying us?" Norman asked. I stiffened. Was Ray going to say the reason that he was 'betraying' us or another good motive?
"It's obvious that there's gotta be some sort of advantage. Think about it. Maybe they get spared from being shipped or something." I knew that wasn't the only reason. He told me that he was doing it to help us escape. But he also said that there was another reason, though he wouldn't tell me what it was.
"Guaranteed survival. Huh." Norman said quietly.
~~~~~~~
After everyone else played tag, it was nighttime. Ray asked to talk to me again.
"So you guys are going to check the rope spots tonight?" I asked. Ray nodded his head.
"Yes. Listen, Y/N, I want you to listen at the door when we search the rope spots." He said, staring right at me. I raised an eyebrow, confused.
"Why?"
"...Just... trust me," He said quietly. I was still confused, but I nodded my head. Of course, I trusted him. He was the closest person to me in my life.
"Of course I trust you, Ray," I said smiling. He widened his eyes. I smiled at him before walking away for dinner.
~~~~~~~
I listened at the door as they checked under the bed for the rope. It was muffled, but I could make out what they were saying
"No rope?" I heard Ray ask.
"It's gone." Norman's voice was even quieter.
"Really? Well then, guess it was Don." Ray said. It was quiet for a minute before I heard something that I had been dreading for a while.
"Actually, it's you who's the traitor, Ray." Norman said. I widened my eyes. Here comes the acting.
