Matias

2014 (Matias narrates):

     -Guys, this is Emily Acevedo, she comes from Cartagena and she will be with us from now on-.

     A beautiful girl peeked through the door of the classroom, she looked so sad.

     -Sit in the empty chair next to Matias"- said the teacher to the girl. She approached me.

     -Hello-" she said, not looking at me, just looking at the floor, her hair covered her face.

     -Hi, I am Prince Matias, I come from a kingdom in a faraway island and I am undercover as a spy in this boring school, and you, Miss, what's your name?-

     -I'm Emily, nice to meet you "Your Majesty"- she said laughing. She has a beautiful smile, I promise I won't let it disappear from her face ever again.

2018 (Matias narrates):

Spending New Year's without Mily was not easy, we always spent that day together but this time she had no choice but to go to Cartagena with her family. Afterwards I lost contact with her because they took away her cell phone, she is crazy... but I understand her, her parents are very strict and boring, she needed to let off steam.

I like Emily, she is a beautiful and sweet girl, I know every single thing that goes through her head and I also know her weaknesses, sadness and what makes her happy. I have liked her since I first saw her enter the classroom, a little girl of 11 years old, she was sad because she had been taken away from all her family and friends, I knew I had to cheer her up and since that day she is like my little sister. People say that we are together, but she doesn't like me, she likes Simon and he is a very lucky boy, anyway, I am happy to be her friend.

When she was at her church camp I was at soccer camp, so we didn't talk much those days. The day she came back from her camp I had already arrived from mine and I was very happy to see her and tell her everything that had happened.

-Matias, you and art really don't get along well.- I hear Bella snap me out of my thoughts, we are making a welcome sign for Mily but my part is really not very presentable.

-I do what I can Isabella, you don't have to be so bossy- I tell her sarcastically. Bella and I aren't best friends, but she's a good person.

-Now... What shall we write in it? Gaby or Mily? said Bella- I know she wants to call her Gaby, but nobody calls her that, only her.

-What if we just put Emily?- I say calmly, hoping she won't say anything weird.

-All right, fair enough.-

We decorated it a bit, Bella did everything, I just passed things around. It was a long time before Mily arrived, so we started playing video games until Bella's cell phone rang.

~Bella answers~

-Hi Maria, how's Gaby?- As she listened to Mily's mother speak, Bella's smile disappeared, leaving a face of terror, she began to cry.

-IT CAN'T BE! IS SHE ALRIGHT?- I'm getting worried, what's going on? Bella knelt on the floor with one hand covering her face and the other trying to hold her cell phone.

-We'll keep an eye out.-

~End of call~

-Mati, Emily's bus crashed, they say it is very serious and ambulances are on their way.- She said, desperately crying.

I hugged her with tears in my eyes. Let it be nothing serious, let them not get hurt so badly, let nothing bad happen to Emily.

~Mati's cell phone rings~

-Hello Maria, how are you all? How is Mily doing? I heard that today she is going to be discharged- I am very excited, I haven't heard much from Emily since the accident, only what Bella tells me.

-Hello Matias, yes she will be discharged today, but I need you to support Emily a lot- She sounds tired and very sad.

-Yes, tell me what happened- I said, trying not to sound too worried.

-Emily hit her head hard in the accident- I felt an emptiness in my stomach, Emily and her family are like my family. -Mati, she went blind, there is no cure- Maria said from the other end of the phone, crying like I had never heard her cry before.

I didn't know what to say, I managed to tell her I would come in the afternoon and hung up the call. Blind? I can't believe it, she had such a complicated life and now this, what will I tell her when I see her? I can't tell her I understand her, because I don't understand her, even when I close my eyes, I see at least a trace of light, but I can't imagine what it will feel like not to see anything, the colors, she won't be able to read again or watch her favorite series, she won't be able to see her family, her friends, me. She needs my help.

I called Bella and told her what Maria told me, I told her to go to Mily's house later, I left my house and went to Emily's house, I stopped by the store to buy her favorite chocolates, she won't be able to see them but at least she will be able to taste them, I think.

I breathed heavily, with my hands sweaty, a lump in my throat and a big emptiness in my stomach and rang the doorbell of her house.
