"Maybe... Maybe... Maybe– maybe Coy is right...?"
"My daughter, you say?"
Claude's voice booms within the Throne Room, bouncing off the walls. He leans on his golden throne, looking down at the three below him.
The Duke of Alpheus, Roger, felt cold sweat drip down his back as he bows. He feels his knees weaken due to his fear, trying to calm his racing heart.
"Y-yes, your Majesty," Roger stutters his answer, biting his lip until it tore.
His son, who was beside him, could only curse in his head. Ijekiel, from the moment Quitterie entered his room with a grim expression, knew something was amiss.
Who would have thought the cat is out of the bag?
Earlier this day, Ijekiel had to be dragged by Quitterie to his closet just to get dressed. Ever since he was young, he knew that his father is somewhat foolish.
Now, Roger wasn't just somewhat. He is.
Even Quitterie agreed as she fixed his tie for him. Just in case Ijekiel faces the Emperor's wrath, Quitterie placed a protection spell on him by kissing his forehead.
After that affection gesture, he was nagged the entire morning. Though the scolding went into one ear and left the other, Ijekiel knew to fear for his life today.
At least he got a free kiss from the girl he loves. That was probably the best thing that happened to Ijekiel's day, maybe even his whole life. Well, other than meeting Quitterie, that is.
Back to the story—
Claude's dagger-like glare bore holes through Jennette's soul. She, once again, feels suffocated being in the presence of the man that nearly killed her.
She keeps her head down, refusing to meet the Emperor's eyes. But not just that, Jennette didn't want to see the twins' current expression. The brunette's heart stopped when something crossed her mind—
Could this be considered betrayal?
If it was, Jennette was too ashamed to even be on the same earth as the two. She prays for the ground to swallow her now, maybe even make a wave crash over her—to take her away and clean her sins.
