I feel like I know her. But how? Who is this mystery girl? Why does she get so nervous when she's around me? I walk into the kitchen and have a seat next to June at the dinner table. She seems surprised that I did this.
"So today is your birthday, right?" I decide to ask to fill the silence between us
"Yes." she simply states
"How old are you now?"
"I believe it is very impolite to ask a women's age. Am I wrong?" She teases
"Forgive me." I flash her a smile, and she blushes
"So is there anything else you would like to tell me?" I ask "I just got your name, birth date, age, and occupation. Do you think that's enough for a man to know?"
"I guess not. What more would you like to know?"
"W--"
"Buon appetit!" Tess cut in. She placed the turkey on the center of the table next to the bowl of peas and mashed potatoes.
"It's lovely. Did you do this, Tess?" June asks
"Yes, with the help of my fellow nurse at the hospital. Her name's Eve. She's really good with this sort of stuff."
The food certainly looked amazing, but I wasn't really hungry anymore. I wanted to keep talking with June.
"So Eden, did you get the job?" Tess asked. Eden. Almost forgot he was here.
"Well, I don't know yet. But I have a good feeling I might." Eden replies
"It's all he could talk about." I say
"Well, I give you the best of luck." Tess smiled
"Thanks," Eden replied, grinning, "wow Tess, this food is amazing!"
"Really is." Another man said... Pascao?
"Thank you" Tess laughed.
June just sat and watched, smiled, and laughed along with the conversation. She casually takes out her phone and I notice that it is ringing. But I can't tell who is calling her.
"June, is everything alright?" Tess asks
"Uh, yeah," she reply's "Anden is calling me, I think I better take this. Ill be right back."
Tess seemed uneasy when June said who it was from, "Don't worry, June. It's alright." Anden. Anden. I start to feel something when I think of him, anger, frustration, jealousy. But why? Why am I getting all of these emotions from a man I don't even know?
June gets up and walks into a different room and I feel the sudden urge to follow her, as if on instinct. What's going on with me?
Tess, Eden, and Pascao resume their conversation. But all I can think about is June's conversation. What if something's wrong? I think, Why else would the Elector be calling her?
"Daniel?" I snap my head up to see everyone staring at me, expecting me to talk.
"What?" I ask
"Pascao asked about what job you had in Antarctica." Tess tells me.
"I worked as a-" I am cut off when June runs into the kitchen, fear stricken across her face.
"What is it, June?" Tess asks worriedly
"Anden--Republic--West Australia--" June looked frantic taking breathing heavily. "I have to go. Now."
"What?" I ask, "What's going on?" But June was already out the door. But I couldn't hold back anymore.
I ran after her.
