It was past midnight. Hotaru doesn't know if the man was still at the spot where she left him, but she has a feeling that he is.She huffed, taking off the blanket off her shoulders and securing the scarf around her neck better. She should've at least left the blanket with him.
Halfway there, she staggered on her feet suddenly.
She fell on her knees, a sudden chill going up her spine and her sight getting blurry. Her hand grasp her head, a groan slipping out from her gritted teeth as she cluthes the blanket close to her chest.
"We'll get through this together. Hold on, they'll be here soon–"
"No, It's alright."
"I love you."
"If you love me, then you wouldn't let yourself bleed out like this!"
"Hey... Wake up.. Please.."
A cold hand that was supposed to be warm, being grasped by shaky and smaller ones.
Shooting up once the pain and dizziness subsided, her head was hazy, but she found herself running back to where she left Kyoujuro.
He was still there, but he was under a tree, his eyes closed and his breathing steady.
Hotaru hesitantly stepped closer, her breath coming out in short puffs and her head still clouded by the things she saw. Then she collapsed on her knees next to him.
Those things– they look like memories. But none of those happened. At least, they haven't yet. She hopes that none of those will happen.
They're not dreams either. And it's impossible for her mind to generate so accurate and realistically looking images. No, there's even a cold sensation left in her hands. From the hand she supposedly grasped.
Slowly, she reach for Kyoujuro's hand.
It's warm. He's still warm.
Hotaru nearly jump out of her skin as he suddenly moved. She almost let go of his hand if he didn't clutch hers tighter.
"Fireman," she mentioned casually, like her heart isn't beating so fast that it might as well combust. "You should have gone home already." She watch as he faintly brush his lips at the back of her hand. Her head throbbed as another set of images flashed through her mind.
It was just like this, but they're in a battlefield, holding each other as their lives was slowly disappearing.
"I know you'll come back," he muttered, snapping her out of her daze. Hotaru stare at him, before she drape the blanket over his shoulders.
"I'm sor–"
Hotaru almost shoved her hand to his mouth to stop his words. She wince at his confused look as he have her thumb on his mouth. Hope that doesn't taste like grass.
"Don't apologize," she sighed. "It's not your fault. I was being selfish. I'm sorry I lashed out to you like that." She said, leaning on the tree and avoiding his eyes as she tried to get her thumb out.
Only for her thumb to remain there. She pulled, but he still have it in his mouth. After letting out another sigh, she slowly look up, giving him a deadpan look.
He has this amused grinning face with a finger stupidly on his mouth, like a fucking dog refusing to let go of a toy. Well, he certainly looks like he's enjoying his new toy.
